About this deal

This isn’t technically part of the installation, but it’s worth remembering when calculating the cost, as you don’t have this issue with a direct thermostat replacement like the Nest Learning Thermostat. Design One thing that really sets the Evohome apart is how user-friendly it is. It’s a smart home thermostat for people who don’t like new and complicated technology – and that’s not us, yet we were still very impressed, which is saying something. Each radiator valve is also capable of Window Detection (configurable through the clunky on-device menu that you’ll want to use the manual to decipher), turning heating off to a radiator when you open a window or door. The option – called Win Type in the menus – is turned on by default, but you can configure how long it takes to trigger, and even the temperature fall rate to turn it on. To be honest, you’re better off leaving the defaults alone. There’s a wizard on hand that asks you simple questions to build a schedule for you, but I found it easier to set the schedule manually. Once one room is configured, you can copy its schedule for different days and other rooms. There’s no learning option available.

At its most basic, Honeywell Evohome requires the Wi-Fi controller and the boiler relay. Depending on your boiler, you’ll either need the kit with the standard on/off relay, or the OpenTherm Bridge, which provides modulating heating control. The latter is the best option if your boiler supports it, since you’ll increase your energy savings as a result (see, What is OpenTherm?). require a combined programmer and thermostat with an ‘advanced’ energy saving feature. Namely: weather compensation, load compensation or smart controls that combine automation and optimisation features. (Or you can fit a flue gas recovery unit.) New installations of a heat only or system boiler: While most heating systems start with a single-zone thermostat and let you build out multiroom control, Evohome is designed with multiroom in mind. As such, the system is more expensive than much of the competition, but the trade-off is well worth it if you’re after fine control. This could be the answer for me, although I'd be loathed to move away from Honeywell User Experience. While it is possible to just put your entire home at the same level constantly, that would be like doing the school run in a Porsche. You get Evohome to get unprecedented control – just be prepared to spend some time and effort exercising that control. What are smart radiator valves? Can they work with your current heating controls? How much are smart TRVs?

If you use the boiler manufacturer's own smart TRVs you only have to deal with one manufacturer for all your heating system products Perhaps some clever plumber out there has some inside knowledge of valve bodies which have nice, easy to move pins which could reduce the noise? Everything you can do from the touchscreen controller, you can also do from the smartphone app, either remotely or in your home, bar copying schedules between zones. Honeywell has designed the app so you can see all the different zones and related temperatures directly on the home screen. On the flip side is Cold Weather Boost, which can apply a boost to the rooms that you select when it’s cold outside. Typically, cold weather can cause drafts that make a room feel cold. Rather than having to keep turning up the temperature, Cold Weather Boost lets you set the temperature boost you want to apply automatically. The default setting is 1.5-degrees, but you can override this with your settings. You can also choose the zones that you want the boost to apply to. In my house, I have the boost on the rooms that I know are colder generally, but leave it off on the new kitchen, which has much better insulation.

Security

The Honeywell evohome HR92UK Radiator controller (HR92) allows control of individual radiators and zones using an evohome controller. The evohome controller is able to time and temperature control up to 12 heating zones using multiple HR92UK’s. Every heating zone has the ability to be independently time and temperature controlled up to six times per day. An additional relay will be necessary if you want Evohome to control your hot water system as well. At this point, the heating system can operate as any old smart thermostat would, controlling your heating using the temperature sensor in the controller. It doesn’t have many of the ‘smart’ features that you’d expect from a smart thermostat like motion sensor control and geolocation. It doesn’t adapt or learn based on your routines, and isn’t capable of working with HomeKit or Google Assistant without an IFTTT workaround. It’s not that the design is unpleasant; it’s just clearly been designed to be functional rather than fashionable. It does mean that it’ll probably be able to fit in with a wide range of interior design styles, but for our taste the range could do with a bit of an image upgrade.

Installation of the Evohome system is a little more involved than with some other smart thermostats available due to the fact that each radiator in your house needs to be fitted with an individual thermostat. The Honeywell Evohome allows you to set schedules for each individual thermostat, so if you know that your bedroom is only used at night, you can set it to be cold during the day, heat up half an hour before you head to bed, and then cool down to your preferred sleeping temperature through the night. The product was designed with noise reduction in mind and does compare favourably with both older designs and competitive products. Heatpumps, OpenTherm, standard boilers, underfloor heating: you name it, Evohome supports it. You should not buy it if… Some manufacturers have produced a wireless TRV that can be controlled and adjusted from a smart phone, however unlike smart TRVs they do not communicate with the thermostat to bring the boiler on and off. The thermostat will have to be on anyway and the only real benefit is that you do not have to physically adjust the TRVs, they can be done from your phone. The products below are only wireless TRVs. The Tado TRVs can work in the same way. Smart TRVs Schedules can be adjusted by day, too, so you can run your heating to suit your activity, such as changing things for the weekend when you may lie in for a bit.
