About this deal

A few months ago, I did a review of the Leonardo Momento Magico which I affectionately called “The OG” because there is a new Magico in town! Earlier this year, Leonardo Officina Italiana released an updated version of the Momento Magico, which I will refer to as the Momento Magico 2022. I won’t go into the same level of detail as in the previous writeup and instead, will highlight the differences. That being said, there’s no getting around the fact that this is a large pen. I show it below compared to everything from a TWSBI Eco to a King of Pen. The body is not as wide as the King of Pen, but it is longer and heavier. Maybe I’ve just gotten used to big pens over time, and others with small hands may not agree- but because the pen is so well balanced, and because the section works so well for me- I have no issues with the size of this pen. NEW* The Leonardo Officina Italiana Momento Zero Jade Green Momento Zero fountain pen. Leonardo Officina Italiana announced that the Jade Green Momento Zero will be the 1st to feature their new steel Elastic nib (available in EF or F). Beyond the obviously great materials, it’s the details that Leonardo really does well in my opinion. The metal bands at the end of the body and the section are a really nice touch. The grip section of the Grande is a little longer than that of the Momento Zero, and I think that length is needed to balance the pen. The section tapers a bit, and the thinness of the pen at the point of the grip makes this large pen manageable to use even for someone with small hands like me.

Over 45 years of experience in the field of writing instruments, handed down from father to son, from generation to generation. Classic Design. In terms of design, Leonardo has definitely gone for the classic look. The shape somewhat reminds me of a Sailor Pro Gear, but slightly larger with peaked ends reminiscent of a Nakaya Piccolo or Long Piccolo. All of the materials - acrylic, celluloid, or ebonite - exude a vintage vibe and have excellent depth to the various patterns, and Leonardo uses simple, understated trim to avoid the trap that Delta and Omas sometimes fell into, which is making the pens too flashy or “busy” in an effort to create a unique look. The Momento Zero has a screw cap that is postable, but posting is not super tight and makes the pen top heavy, so I prefer not to post. The pen comes in the larger sized Leonardo Officina Italiana box that holds the pen and a 40 ml bottle of excellent Leonardo Officina Italiana fountain pen ink. The Writing ExperienceCompared to two of my other favorite gold nibs, the oversize #8 is a little softer than the 823 but has less “give” than the Sailor King of Pen that tends to produce a bit of line variation. It’s also a little broader than the M nib counterparts of those pen models. The name Momento Zero, absolutely evoking, exactly means a new beginning, a start from scratch; the first pen made by a new company, based on experience and passion of a strong team. The Leonardo Momento Zero collection is inspired by the Italian vintage style, worldwide known; it’s a classic pen, well balanced with size and metal trims. I was honestly surprised by how much I love this material. I think all of Leonardo’s materials look every better in person than they do in photos online, and this one is no expectation. The white portions of the material are a swirly mix of slightly transparent areas and a pearlescent shine. That extra depth to the material is what makes so many of the Leonardo materials special. And the story goes on ... A family tradition. Leonardo is a forge, a laboratory where experience and craftsmanship are mixed giving life to "pleasure", the pleasure of writing.

The Momento Zero Grande is a large size pen with fitted with a number 6 nib and holding one of the largest piston fills available. It is a pleasure to hold and and write with the Grande pen. The size and appearance of the pen reflects simplistic style. They have a timeless look. I’ve teased this in the last couple of posts, so I’ll come right out and say it: the Leonardo Momento Zero has blown me away. In this review I’ll explain why.

Standard edition

Even the ebonite and resins are subjected to dedicated treatments to last over time, forever, to be passed down from generation to generation. Grudgingly, I have to admit that as much as I love this pen (and others) this one’s going to Ana! That said, you really should try one of these and decide for yourself! What I will comment on is the difference in feel between the Zero and the Magico. Despite both pens being made of acrylic resin, the Magico is about 20% lighter, weighing in at about 20 grams. The difference in weight is noticeable with the Momento Zero feeling denser than the Magico. The sky merges with the art of writing, the “Momento Zero” collection is enriched with a new iconic Nuvola pen, Nuvola in italian language mean Cloud. The Momento Zero Giada (Jade) is afresh and contemporary color which matches perfectly with the vintage style design of the pen.
