About this deal

Nina both embodies and upends the well-worn trope of oblivious Americans experiencing a clash of cultures in historic, aristocratic Europe. This has been the subject of classic works by Mark Twain ( The Innocents Abroad, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court), Henry James ( Daisy Miller, The Ambassadors), Nathaniel Hawthorne ( The Marble Faun), and many others. Jennifer Thorne’s specific use of this motif in Lute echoes that of Oscar Wilde in The Canterville Ghost, but with Wilde’s trademark humor replaced by a pervasive sense of foreboding. Lute follows Nina in the run-up to the Day. As it approaches, the islanders become more strange – some manic, some phlegmatic – and Nina begins to piece together secrets that cross generations.. When the Day itself occurs, with its inevitably cataclysmic events, Nina has choices to make for the islanders, for her children, and, ultimately, for herself.

Escape Rating A-: I usually say that I prefer to sidle up to horror, rather than hitting it head-on, and that’s so very true of the story in Lute. It’s easy to believe, right along with Nina, that whatever happens in Lute on The Day isn’t quite what actually occurs, so the dread creeps up on the reader just as it does on Nina.I lean forward to peer at him. The mistiness in his expression has been replaced by stone-still certainty. He’s caught the island’s superstition, hasn’t he? Somebody’s been filling his head with nonsense. Matthew, maybe, or one of the village kids. Four,” I murmur, mentally correcting the mechanic’s body count. “ Four more bodies—wait, where’s Charlie?” We rumble past the school and down to the island’s landing bay. I scan every inch of horizon along the way but can’t spot Charlie or anyone else of his size, probably because all the other children are already on their way off the island. I’m sure I saw them go off together.” She wipes her hands on her trousers. “Do you want me to have a look around?”

The voice I hear when I berate myself these days sounds more and more like my mother’s, that hissing whisper through a smiling mouth, quiet enough that other parents could never hear. Whatever kind of parent I am, I’m a hell of a lot better than she was. She doesn’t deserve any space in my head.

She’s flying past me before I can think to grab her. At the sight of whatever John’s holding, she goes very still, a near-silent oh falling from her mouth. My placid sorry, I’ll handle her smile becomes a real one when I lean over John’s hand too and see a glossy green beetle with a red face. Nina Treadway is new to The Day. A Florida girl by birth, she became a Lady through her marriage to Lord Treadway, whose family has long protected the island. Nina’s heard about The Day, of course. Heard about the horrific tragedies, the lives lost, but she doesn’t believe in it. It’s all superstitious nonsense. Stories told to keep newcomers at bay and youngsters in line. But panic starts to stir in my chest again, drowning out any irritation. Charlie is six. Charlie is missing. How could we have let this happen? Riveting, atmospheric and haunting, Lute feels like a dark, mesmerizing spell. I promise once you begin this taut, unrelenting stunner, you won’t be able to put it down.” As I squint west past John’s head, my eye catches on a trio of brightly colored figures headed down toward the beach. They look so reassuringly ordinary.

But see, you are the expert here, because all other experts are gone. You know engines. You know your own boat. Can’t you just take another look at this one?” Oh my God.” I practically keel over with relief as Joanna opens the door for me. “This child is going to kill me.” The eerie atmosphere also added a great deal to the mysteries of Lute. Usually the island is bright and warm and beautiful, but on the Day it turns ominous. People hide in their homes, hoping to avoid unnecessary risk. Nina’s dog Max gets out of the house and Nina decides to go after him, even though Hugh tells her not to. The feeling of dread is palpable, since you never know exactly where the danger is coming from. Thorne also delves into the history of Lute and describes how the rituals and beliefs came to be, an ancient pact involving Druid priests that adds to the sense of mystery. Thorne’s subversion of folk horror tropes and focus on small, intimate beats make for a gripping reading experience recommended for fans of Midsommar and Jennie Melamed’s Gather the Daughters.” – Publishers Weekly It matters which country. Finland surrendered to the Russo-American armies a month after the war began, the first big domino to fall.Lute is told as a first-person narrative by Nina, a young Floridian who has left her academic life behind to wed Lord Hugh Treadway, whom she met on a cruise with her grandmother. As the newly minted Lady Treadway, Nina grapples with settling into her new life on Lute while also bringing a natural skepticism toward the legends of the island. As an American, Nina’s assimilation on Lute is made especially difficult due to the global political situation, where the United States has allied with Russia on the wrong side of a new world war. Now, after seven years on the island and with two young children, Nina is about to experience her first day of ritualistic sacrifice.
