All pre-filled syringes in our catheterisation jelly range are single-use and sterile. Any vaginal examination or speculum examination can be quite uncomfortable for the patient, and embarrassing. So you want to minimise any level of discomfort the procedure may involve.” Hayley explains.

A sterile, water-based formulation is the preferred lubricant for many clinicians in the UK, Hayley explains, “We’ve been using water-based lubricants here in the UK for many years now as the older style, oil-based lubricants can damage polymers. For example, rubber gloves or certain other materials that we may use in procedures.” For adult patients, the maximum single dosage is 16g of gel which contains 0.32g of lidocaine. This is equivalent to 16ml of Optilube Active. We offer non-sterile Vue Ultrasound Gel in bottles of 250ml and 1l. These larger volume options of ultrasound gel are ideal for use in a busy healthcare setting. Non-sterile ultrasound gel is suitable for use during low risk, general examinations on intact skin, and not immediately prior (within 24 hours) to an invasive procedure on the same area. The tissue down there can be very delicate, for example at the vagina entrance. So you’d want to insert the speculum as gently as possible and the lubrication helps the speculum go in without causing any microtrauma to the tissue.” OptiLube Active brings the added benefits of a local anaesthetic (Lidocaine 2%) and antiseptic (Chlorhexidine Gluconate 0.05%).
