My key aims were to explore Fi'draah's effect on the t'au in more detail and develop Jhi'kaara, which I'm satisfied with, but Tal'hanzo's narrative and the mystery of the lake turned out more open-ended than I expected. The Angels Resplendent are a brotherhood that falls from grace into extreme dogma rather than Chaos. As the Angels Penitent they are an inversion of themselves, rejecting the pursuit of knowledge, art, and personal enlightenment in favour of puritanical nihilism. I regard them as a reflection of the wider Imperium’s decline, their grand (or merely grandiose?) aspirations tarnished then gone to rust. And yet they fight on, like an unquiet corpse that refuses to lie down and rot away. I feel their complexity and fatal flaws make them a perfect Chapter for a horror piece. So after sitting on this book for the better part of two months due to 2020 being 2020, I sat down today and pretty much devoured Requiem Infernal in one sitting. There was something so florid about the way in which Requiem Infernal was written. The words seem to just flow off the paper – getting immediately trapped inside my head. The world – as creepy as it was – came to life with the descriptions given.
