About this deal

I'm also in the "neither" camp. I've used my 16-50 with my A6500 but I prefer my Sony 20/2.8 and haven't touched the zoom since I got the 20/2.8. This appears to be a common problem with the SELP1650. Sony needs to make the internal barrel from metal, and perhaps some of the internal levers and gears. Going slightly of subject here, but I think it's worth a mention, as you are looking for an 1650 replacement. I have the 1855, always had it, never used it, for several reasons.

The zoom/focusing ring is about 3/8th inch wide and has an array of small ribs for texture. Very little force is necessary to turn the ring; it's easy to rotate with one finger. The zoom/focus action is very smooth, and rotates indefinitely, as zooming and focusing are electronically controlled. While focusing or zooming, the front element of the lens doesn't rotate, so filters such as circular polarizers work fine. The lens does extend during zooming, though, about 1/4th of an inch. Once you zoom to 35mm, distortion is reduced greatly, and the corners look very similar to the average. At 50mm, the average distortion across the entire frame is very close to zero, while there is a bit of pincushion distortion (less than 0.5%) at the edges of the frame. Auto, Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Incandescent, Fluorescent Lamp, Fluorescent Light, Flash, Custom, UnderwaterDoes anyone know if this is compatible? It seems to be cheaper. Are there differences? Is it still compatible with my A6000? This lens isn't a ''constant'' lens, in that as you increase the focal length, both the maximum and minimum aperture sizes decrease. The following table reflects the aperture changes as you zoom: Focal length For a collapsable kit lens that finally delivers on the Nex promise of compactness, I am extremely happy with this lens. It is stellar over the focal lengths that are most important to my shooting. YMMV. AF Assist Light, Built-in Flash, Microphone, Speaker, Hot shoe, Image Stabiliser, External Flash (optional) I recently (unfortunately) broke my SELP1650. To make a long story short, my A6000 stopped being able to recognize the lens. I sent it in to Sony and they said it was physical damage and therefore would not honor the warranty. It's fine, I'm over it.

The lens I have is giving good performance across the zoom range and I am satisfied with the performance across the frame into the corners. I feel it does better than the SLRgear report gadget states.I suspect you're right. I'm not personally a fan of the SELP1650 and prefer to mostly use primes with my a6000 or my 18-105G lens when I need a versatile zoom. However, my wife isn't really into photography, beyond some casual stuff, and really likes how tiny and compact the 16-50 zoom is. I don't think she would be happy with something like the larger 18-50 kit and she doesn't do enough photography to spend the money on the 16-70z either. Also, when I've tried to introduce her to primes she keeps asking how to zoom and doesn't appreciate the response, "With your feet". One bad thing about the 1650 is that it's quite easy to move zoom in a little bit and you won't notice it, at least I don't notice that when happens, I accidentallytouch the zoom control that is located on the edge of the lens, but well, I might be really bad with my left hand haha. This lens became my most used lens on the NEX-6, replacing my 10-18 OSS and Sigma 19 f2.8 for general shooting and the 50 f1.8 OSS for daytime shooting. 16mm is wide enough for most applications, and the compactness is a joy to use. I just hated that it was rarely very sharp. Mine was lousy most of the time even in the center. Soft corners I could have tolerated, but not soft middle. I have an aftermarket lens hood and cap to replace the original cap that falls off easily: Fotasy Metal Screw-in Lens Hood + Lens Cap for Sony E-mount SELP1650 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Retractable Zoom Lens.

I might be better off getting a fast wide angle as was suggested above. One area I'm thinking to looking into is star field/astro.At all focal lengths, once you stop down to f/16 and beyond, diffraction limiting sets in, and you'll begin to see significant loss in image sharpness. Do you prefer size or traditional zoom ergonomics? Besides that, there is not a whole lot of difference in IQ. I've had both, prefer the 16-50 due to it's size and 16mm wide setting. If you stop this lens, and use it in good light, it does pretty good. Corners at wide angle are not great, but the 18-55 is very good as well. The 18-55 does take 49mm filters which is pretty common for Sony APS-C lenses. That being said, you can grab a 40.5-49 step up ring and an extra 49mm cap and leave that on the 16-50 when you think you are going to be using filters.

Multi-Language Menu, Power Save Mode, Self Cleaning Sensor, Self Timer, App Functionality, Noise Reduction SELP1650 is one thing, I understand this is the e-mount kit lens that I need replaced. But there's another 16-50mm e-mount Sony lens floating around with the serial number B00CIT29XW. Description is "Sony 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Alpha E-mount Retractable Zoom Lens" There are a lot of people who hate the 16-50. But no one can deny that the 16-50 is one of a kind. Putting the APS-C camera a size smaller than many M43 kits.

I bet you won't be happy with a 28-70 even though it is rated highly on APS-C. 28mm is just not wide enough and you will have a hard time unless you have some alternatives for wide angle. Which once again put you in the situation of finding an alternative for 16-50. Monochrome, Posterisation, Retro, Toy Camera Effect, Dynamic Tone, High-Key, Soft Focus, HDR Painting, Miniature Effect, Watercolour, Illustration, Sepia, Partial Colour I have tried both on my A6000. I like the handling and look of the 18-55, but I prefer the 16-50PZ since it's smaller and has the extra 2mm that I need since I enjoy taking photos of landscapes and buildings when I travel. As a kit lens, the Sony SELP1650 performance is still acceptable. It is compact, lightweight, and has a decent appearance. Although it suffered a lot from barrel distortion and light fall-off (vignetting/shading) at the wide-angle (at 16 mm), but if you only shoot in JPEG format, then the problems would not bother you at all. Its power zoom offers a smooth zooming experience for video recording. At the same time, the OSS is useful for shooting in low light condition and help a lot for stable video recording. The sharpness of photos may not please everyone here, but it won’t let you down (so much) neither. The Sony 16-50mm is equipped with Sony's Optical SteadyShot image stabilization technology, which worked quite well. See our IS Test tab for more details on this.
