About this deal

McDermid, who worked as a journalist in the 70s and 80s, gives a nail-biting account of the newsroom, and Allie is another character I’m looking forward to learning more about.

Three quarters of the way through, she is forced to go cold turkey, turning into Superwoman in a totally implausible about turn. Wouldn't like to judge which is the most implausible scenario as there are so many. Haughton has created a fantastically atmospheric setting ... it's a chilling race to the finish to discover whodunnit' Observer Das Setting war für mich absolut gelungen. Die Autorin beschreibt die Station und die eisigen Landschaften mit sehr vielen Details und so manchmal konnte man das beklemmende Gefühl der Charaktere gut nachempfinden. Thank you to the author, publishers Hodder & Stoughton and online book club The Pigeonhole for the chance to read this for free. This is an honest and voluntary review. I loved the diverse cast of characters and didn't guess who the killer was. They all seemed suspicious, with lots of dark secrets gradually being revealed, so I kept changing my mind.Haughton has created a fantastically atmospheric setting … it’s a chilling race to the finish to discover whodunnit’ Observer Set against the dangerous sub-zero temperatures end endless night of the Antarctic… Brilliantly atmospheric and terrifying‘– CATHERINE COOPER Elvis, too, is put on Leonora’s trail by his boss, the mysterious and powerful El Mago. As their paths converge and they get closer to the truth, their lives become more dangerous. I can’t wait to see what Moreno-Garcia does next. The Dark For me, this was like Agatha Christie on speed. Which is perhaps appropriate as Kate, the main character, is a pill popping Doctor. Are the pills the reason for her bad decisions throughout the book, or is she just flakey? Either way, she is totally unlikeable as she stumbles from one disaster to another within the 'closed door' setting of Antarctica. She suspects everyone, at some time, as does the reader, faced with more red herrings than a Fishmonger! Pulled in by the synopsis. UN base station in Antartica, preparing to hunker down for winter. No light, no plane, no one else but the few winter crew members for the next 6 months! In typical fashion, every one has their own secrets. The main character, Kate, is a last minute substitute for the base's previous doctor. As he tragically and unexpectedly died in an accident, an accident with more questions than answers.

The day to day realities of living in these remote conditions make up a lot of the novel and Haughton seems to have done some seriously extensive research into this. Between all the heart-in-mouth moments, I found it fascinating to see how people cope with living in these circumstances. Details about clothes, weather, food supplies, communications, the base’s layout and the science experiments are woven into the fabric of the novel seamlessly. So interesting, but so extreme! The kind of heart-pounding, sleep-stealing read that you want to recommend to everyone you meet. An absolutely thrilling book' - CASS GREEN There was not one character I really liked or related to, and the ending, though not a huge surprise, was anti-climatic. At the base where the characters are living, they are cut off from the wider world. It can take a long time for emergency services to reach them if anything goes wrong. It makes it more important than ever that they work as a team. When Doctor Kate North arrives, she turns up shortly after one member of the group she has been assigned to, has been killed. There is already a tense atmosphere, and everyone, of course, is still upset because of what has happened to their team member. Kate feels as though something isn’t right, and there are murmurings among the group, that there might be more to the death than first meets the eye. One member of the group isn’t prepared to let it lie. But is it possible there is a killer amongst them? If so they could all be in danger. Ultimately enjoyed reading this story. There was certainly room for more edge; more suspense in the writing. Overall a decent 3 to 3.5 star read.

The Dark, Emma Haughton’s chilling new thriller for adults, will be published by Hodder in August 2021. Der Klappentext zu "The Dark" klang sehr interessant und ich war sehr gespannt was mich in der Antarktis begleitet. As I’m much too ginger to really enjoy the sun, I’ve developed a bit of a fascination with cold places. Holidays in Alaska, Russia or Norway – count me in! With that in mind, it was the setting of Antarctica that brought me to this book – and I am so glad it did.

The kind of heart-pounding, sleep-stealing read that you want to recommend to everyone you meet. An absolutely thrilling book' CASS GREEN Tense, thrilling and unpredictable, with one of the most unique and dangerous settings imaginable' ALLIE REYNOLDS The story opens with Kate, our main character and a medical doctor, arriving at a research station in the Antarctic. She has her own reasons for taking the remote job and steps at short notice into a role recently held by a doctor who died in an accident on the ice. As the team shrinks down to core staff for the winter, only 13 people remain at the facility, When that number becomes 12, Kate begins to question whether the death is part of a bigger picture. Not knowing who she can trust, she begins a dangerous investigation…
