Each case goes to great lengths to obfuscate the truth and throw you off the scent. All of the suspects tend to have compelling reasons to commit the crime you are investigating. Even if their tendency to make this as clear as possible in a police interrogation seems a little unlikely. You can spend a lot of time reading the witness statements, suspect interviews, etc. And get to know the characters without it feeling like wasted time. Hours of Entertainment: With over 25 documents to explore in each game, you're in for hours of entertainment. The more you invest, the more satisfying the solution becomes. They do a great job of adding in a red herring or two, so it takes a lot to be sure who the real killer is. One thing we like is you can play this game totally by yourself with just one person. Or you can get the whole family involved. The photos are similarly polarizing. Most are perfectly fine, while others are so obviously photoshopped it’s impossible to take them seriously. None of these things are game breaking, however, which is a testament to the care that has been put into the game overall. But working through the second and third objectives is what made Unsolved Case Files: Jamie Banks turn sour. We felt it was a major stretch to come up with the logic behind the answer to the second objective, and the third objective isn’t just silly, it’s broken. Other times, the solution is so glaringly obvious you wonder how the original detectives managed to dress in the morning.

For example, in one case we did, we first had to prove the original suspect, who was falsely convicted, was actually innocent before we could go on and prove who the real killer was. In another case we did, we first had to prove who was an accomplice before proving who the real killer was, and then we had to go further and find missing people, too. I like that the Unsolved Case Files series has a couple of family-friendly options, so families who want to get accustomed to this type of gameplay can do so without worrying about more adult themes and imagery such as bloody knives or suicide.

All three neighbors were prime suspects, yet investigators were never able to find enough evidence to convict one of them. Your job is to solve the murder by finding the evidence needed to prove which one of Mr. Lumberski’s neighbors killed him. [Source: Unsolved Case Files] A lot of it might be irrelevant fluff or red herrings, but it is clear a lot of care has gone into ensuring each character has a distinct personality and could easily be involved in the story in some way. Unsolved Case Files: Harmony Ashcroft felt plausible (sure, occasionally ridiculous, but I’ll play along for a couple of hours); Unsolved Case Files: Jamie Banks feels like it was a rush job on the part of the designers and writing team. Even before the true killer is revealed, the other suspects just never quite feel right. There are a couple of “red herrings” but those red herrings never quite felt plausible enough for serious consideration. There is a lot of fun to be had with Unsolved Case Files. It is immersive and compelling, and so obviously well crafted. As with many other games like this, you get out what you put in; suspend disbelief, consider these characters as real people and allow yourself to take on the role of a PI. This is how you get the most out of this gem.
