Rachel: “I’d love it to be! ‘Mamma Mia!’ is a good comparison because the songs within the film are famous songs that Spanish and European audiences will be familiar with. The film was constructed around those songs to showcase them. It definitely has a ‘Mamma Mia!’ element for sure.” Plus plenty of archive cinema treats – a classic from Juan Antonio Bardem, the UK premiere of 1970s hidden gems by fellow Spaniard Cecilia Bartolomé, and a programme of shorts from a Mexican feminist film collective. Rachel: “It’s the feeling of the festival. That celebratory sense of the festival, that fiesta idea is what we carry forward now. If we gave ¡Viva! an identity that would be it, it’s a joyous and celebratory thing so the name really encompasses that.”

Rachel: “It very much came from a moment of importance in Spanish cinema; there were some interesting films coming out at that time. What’s impressive is that it started as a Spanish festival, now it’s Spanish and Latin American. The festival focuses on Spanish-speaking countries within Latin America, so we have other languages within the festival, like Catalan.” Tasks to help pupils build skills towards GCSE: role plays, picture‑based tasks, authentic and literary texts and translations. Adelante! units pool and combine language from the module, helping pupils to produce higher level language. To find out more about this feel-good festival, we spoke to HOME’s Head of Film and festival curator, Rachel Hayward where she reveals her favourite film and how the festival champions fresh talent. Rachel Hayward Rachel: “We’ve still got these repercussions of the pandemic so having international film is such a brilliant window to the world that we’ve not been able to explore. It’s a way to learn about history and culture. It’s also a great way to interrogate ourselves about who’s making those films – whose voices don’t we hear? We give opportunities to voice those filmmakers whose work is not necessarily shown, and signpost things to audiences that they might not know about. That worldview is really important I think.” The festival opens on Friday, 6 August with the UK premiere of Ariel Winograd's El Robo del siglo, the wildly entertaining true crime story from Argentina, which plots the events of one of the most famous and complex heists in the country’s history. On Wed 11 Aug we are delighted to present a preview screening of Mexican auteur Michel Franco’s Nuevo orden, which will be introduced by Jason Wood, author of the newly published The Faber Book of Mexican Cinema and HOME’s Creative Director: Film & Culture.

Rachel: “For us, that drive towards societal change underpins a lot of what we do. Every month we look at the films on show and we think about the societal message and so many of our films have that at the heart of them. Whether they’re documentaries or dramas, it’s a crucial driver for change. HOME is a place with space so we try and have opportunities that are free, or at very low cost, where people can come and have discussions. We have an ongoing strand at the moment around environmental work which is very crucial”. Amongst these and all the remaining titles – from Paraguay, Bolivia, Colombia, the Dominican Republic and Mexico – we’re sure you’ll find some cinematic gems to treasure, whether you’re after thrilling drama, joyous comedy or social analysis. All films will begin at the advertised time with no adverts or trailers. All films are in Spanish with English subtitles unless otherwise noted. All age certificates are local to Manchester City Council, unless otherwise stated. On Friday, 13 August, the Bolivian social thriller Pseudo will receive its UK premiere, while on Monday, 16 August there’s the compelling La Última primavera, in which a family recreate the true story of their marginalisation and eviction from La Cañada Real, the largest shanty town in Europe, on the outskirts of Madrid. And rounding off this year’s premiered is Diablada, based on the true story of the Alto Hospicio serial killer, who operated in Chile with total impunity from 1998-2001. Supports you to teach the skills students will need, such as translation and understanding authentic and literary texts, and will help you to understand what is expected at each tier in the linear assessments.
