About this deal

Dark Vengeance gets an extra-special mention, as when an update to the rules was released in July 2014, it remained in place as the go-to Warhammer 40,000 boxed set – and came supplied with an updated rulebook! June 2017 – Dark Imperium Necrons, Grey Knights, Space Marines, and Chaos Marines are all good options for new players. [3] X Research source Some factions can be difficult to play because they rely on complex rules. However, there is something about him which seems to me to be all together too bulky. This doesn't stop him being any less of an impressive character mini which, if I were a Dark Angels player, I would definitely use to lead my troops. The Dark Angels were the first Legion Astartes and, as they would have it, the template on which the other legions were built. They certainly demonstrated a broad spectrum of tactical doctrines, a theory of war known as the Hexagrammaton. However, while I don’t want this style to be a one-off, I don’t want it to become too common either. The novella is the perfect length for this style I think. Gav Thorpe did something similar for his novel Purging of Kadillus, which was also about the Dark Angels, but his character viewpoints fewer and as best as I recall, he didn’t change tenses and perspectives when moving between them. That’s two instances in total I know of. But yeah, this is a unique style and it should keep its uniqueness because while C Z Dunn pulled it off brilliantly, it is easy to see how this can NOT work out, and how some people can be put off by it.

The Datasheet for the Deathwing Command Squad shows that these super-elite terminators offer a toolbox of powerful abilities, a perfect bodyguard for any Dark Angels character;the Ancient’s Banner provides +1 OC, the Deathwing Champion grants +1 to Advance and Charge rolls and allows the unit to use the Heroic Intervention Core Stratagemfor 0CP, and the Apothecary’s Narthecium can resurrect one dead terminator from the unit per turnThe Warhammer 40,000 universe entered a bold new era with the release of Dark Imperium in 2017. The Great Rift had torn open across the galaxy, all but dividing the Imperium in two. Meanwhile, the Avenging Son had been reborn and returned to Terra, even as his own realm of Ultramar was beset by the foetid forces of his brother Mortarion – the latter being the very setting for the narrative of this incredible boxed set. Oh, and did we mention the emergence of the Primaris Space Marines? While the standard minis are by no means bad it is the squad sergeants which really stand out. Each of these is a named character in the box set and they have been given characterful sculpts to match. The Sergeant of the Deathwings is possibly the most impressive of these. Plus, they haven’t given any support in the form of new models to non-Primaris units since the start of 8th. 2012 Release:

The final battle between adopted father and Primarch son was colossal, leading to the mortal wounding of El’Jonson, and the capture of Luther. Thwarted yet again, the Chaos gods opened a rift in the Warp, scattering the disloyal sons of the Lion across both time and space, shattering the planet Caliban into a field of debris. Lastly, I could say a thousand more words on Deathwing Knights than what was covered above, but simply put they’re one of the best datasheets in the game and are well worth your time. Add a Captain in Terminator Armour with Adept of the Codex to keep them in Tactical Doctrine when they don’t need to go supersonic, and consider an Ancient in Terminator Armour to bump up their low OC, and go to town. The new Citadel paints are ok. I enjoy the base paints, as they have a decent coverage but still maintain a good viscosity. I also like the dry paints for drybrushing. The layer paints are so-so, they offer a lot of different colours so I bought some to expand my paint collection as I don't like mixing paints, but I find their coverage is only mediocre and Vallejo Game Colour and P3 are often better in this regard. I don't like the silvers and shades, and I use Army Painter silvers and inks, which are made by the same manufacturer as the old Citadel silvers and washes.

Dark Angels Combat Patrol

Dark Imperium represented a whole new level of miniatures design, both in terms of the reimagined aesthetics of the Death Guard and the first offerings of the awesome range of Primaris Space Marines. As ever, the set included an impressive selection of units for each of the rival factions, including multiple Characters and only a single pre-existing unit in the Plague Marines – the rest were all brand-new! July 2020 – Indomitus The leader of the Dark Angels’ Librarius, Ezekiel is renowned as one of the most powerful psykers the force has fielded since Lion El’Jonson’s time. When not at war, you will find Ezekiel working to maintain the Dark Angels’ history, ensuring that what has passed is never forgotten.

The Librarian can now Deathwing Assault with the DW squad if he wishes making his termy armour upgrade such a good purhcase. Once again, the set was almost overflowing with miniatures for each army, and featured the first appearance of dedicated models for Chaos Cultists, Chosen, and a reimagining of the Chaos Dreadnought of old in the form of a fearsome Helbrute . But it wasn’t all about the Chaos Space Marines – the Dark Angels force included a squad of Ravenwing and Deathwing in addition to a bespoke Tactical Squad. What’s more, the initial wave of Dark Vengeance sets also included a limited edition miniature of Interrogator-Chaplain Seraphicus.

Final Thoughts

We are a small team of Warhammer Enthusiasts and miniature collectors, hoping to support and further promote the hobby. Lion El’Jonson led his knights on a war against the Chaos-twisted creaturesthat stalked Caliban’s treacherous woods. His victory was complete, and a new age of peace and prosperity descended over Caliban – though, as with all things Dark Angels, it was peace with a hidden core of corruption.

After years of collecting, buying and selling, building and painting, we realised that we had amassed a small library of Build Instructions, Assembly Instructions and User Guides for various Games Workshop products.Overall, it may not be “as worth it”, especially with GW’s continued pattern of making old Marines obsolete. Just weeks earlier, we saw them make all HQ Marine Biker units completely obsolete. Stay tuned for part two of this tutorial, aimed for later this week, when I explore how to paint the Ravening and Deathwing parts of your copy of Dark Vengeance! Terminators and Bikers will make for an expensive list. If you go this route you won’t have many bodies to throw at things. This won’t always be an issue, but can make control of the board more difficult than for some other armies. The Lion isn’t as good as he looks: For 380 Points, it’s very difficult to justify that much on a model that controls as little space as the Lion does. While in Gladius he can advance and charge, and he will absolutely mow down most things he touches, his low wound count and middling resiliency for his points can often leave him on cleanup duty or struggling to cross the board in the face of armies with guns bristling. Definitely a fun unit and one that’s reasonably viable, but not one to expect to see on top tables any time soon. In terms of the story and the characterisation, the novel was another hit for me. There are several layers to the story, ostensibly about the Dark Angels fighting against Chaos. But there are hints that it is much more, because there is an undercurrent of the Dark Angels’ hunt for the Fallen in the story. For the uninitiated, the Fallen are traitor Dark Angels from the days of the Horus Heresy, ten thousands years in the in-universe past. This is the Dark Angels’ biggest secret and they will, and can, do anything to keep it that way. Dark Vengeance also connects to Dunn’s recently released audio drama, Malediction, which was a straight-up Dark Angels story about the Fallen. Characters locations from the audio drama are mentioned quite a few times in the novella, and this connection makes this story part of a larger whole.
