About this deal

As ever with an OLED TV, every pixel in the OLED807’s screen can produce its own light, delivering massive local contrast benefits over even the best LCD TVs. The OLED panel in the OLED807, though, builds on this by being one of the latest so-called OLED EX displays, meaning that it has the potential to produce as much as 30% more brightness than many previous OLED TVs. It's a big deal in these days where HDR video is so widely available. The extra contrast afforded by the brighter highlights helps to reinforce edges and textures, giving everything an even more solid and three-dimensional appearance, yet this is also masterfully combined with an even greater degree of subtlety. The lights shining on a tiled wall reveal all sorts of subtle shades on the A95L, and as Peter peers into a bottle in Mother Barnabus's office, the little ship inside is resolved with fabulous fine detail and excellent solidity. The big design difference between it and its siblings is that it has two blade-like feet that take up less desk space rather than a pedestal. The positive is that these are easy to move around and take up less space; the downside is that we found there’s less room to place a soundbar under it. The Philips OLED807 has a similar minimalist design to most of the other OLED TVs on the market, with an ultra-thin metal bezel and a panel that’s millimetres deep at the top, before widening out further down where the electronics, speakers and connections are housed. Since this is a Philips TV, this deeper rear section also includes LEDs for the Ambilight system – more on that later.

Value for money: The 77-inch C2 has always been very good value for a TV of its size and ability, but that's even more the case now that it's a year old and has been significantly discounted. There is a replacement model, the 77-inch C3, but you would have to pay a lot more for that and the upgrades are slight. If you're in the market for a 77-inch OLED TV, we recommend going for a C2 while it's still available and discounted. Information about the number of pixels on the horizontal and vertical side of the screen. A higher resolution allows the display of a more detailed and of higher quality image.Design and features: The 42-inch C3 has a different design to its larger siblings that makes it look more like a monitor or bedroom TV. This makes sense as LG markets it directly to gamers and those living in smaller spaces. Soundwise, the 807 features an upgraded, high-quality and more powerful 70W 2.1 sound system with a dedicated triple ring, rear-facing bass driver supported by four passive radiators.

Smart duties are handled by the latest Android 11 TV OS with both Google Assistant built-in – via push to talk on the remote – and Works with Alexa compatibility. Philips has got its Game preset input lag time down for the OLED807 to 15.1ms with 1080p/60Hz feeds. That’s still 5ms or so higher than the fastest results we’ve seen this year, but you’d have to be a more competitive gamer than us for 5ms to make a serious difference to your performance. The LG OLED48C3 is comfortably the best 48-inch OLED TV you can buy, combining thrilling, authentic picture quality with the best gaming specs you'll find anywhere. ★★★★★

Information about whether there is a possibility for wall mounting according to the VESA Mounting Interface Standard (MIS). Android TV is also absent. Instead, this model uses the 'Saphi' operating system often found on Philips' more affordable European TVs. This could limit the number of streaming apps, but it's too early to say for sure. USB recording for digital channels only, recordings may be limited by broadcast copy protection (CI+). Country and channel restrictions may apply. Smart features, finally, are provided by Android TV. It seems a little strange Philips hasn’t yet migrated to Google TV given the latter’s enhanced appearance and slightly more friendly interface, but to be fair the brand does appear to have mastered Android TV now, delivering one of the most stable and speedy implementations of it that we’ve seen.

Philips 77OLED807 OLED TV review

We also didn’t get on with the new Ambient AI modes, especially in the way they tend to make pictures look excessively dark, leading to a loss of shadow detail, if you’re watching the TV in a dark room. So you should turn these off.
