About this deal

The design of each bottle of Martell captures and conveys the history, elegance and savoir-faire of the oldest of the great cognac houses in France, from the blue ribbon and tradition-inspired label, to the telltale arch at the base.

Martell is one of the world’s oldest cognac producers. Founded in 1715 by Jean Martell, the company boasts an impressive line of cognacs known for their aromatics and richness. The Martell line is famous for being incredibly smooth and oaky because they’re aged in old oak casks for many years (at a minimum of two) before being bottled. A Brand with a Rich History All cognacs are brandies, but not all brandies are cognacs. In general terms, brandy is produced by distilling wine and aged in wooden casks. Cognac is brandy that is produced in the region of Cognac, France, and follows very strict distilling procedures. What is Martell cognac made from? A brandy can also be designated as an Hors d’Age, which translates from French as “beyond age” and covers the spirits that have been aged for at least six years and often for decades, or “vintage” which covers those produced from the very best years. A vintage brandy is the best of the best and should only be sipped neat.Eight cases of Martell Cognac was taken by Paul-Emile Victor, an explorer, and Cognac connoisseur, on a polar expedition. The brandy they produced came from fermented fruit mash made from Ugni Blanc grapes, and it has almost ten bottlings. As the famous saying goes, not all brandy is cognac, but all cognac is brandy. In other words, cognac is a type of brandy, made specifically in the Cognac region of France. It’s essentially what champagne is to sparkling wine. What does VSOP mean for brandy?

A unique aspect of Hennessy Cognac is that the responsibility for each and every eau-de-vie is not down to a single person. Instead, the house has a Tasting Committee. This group of eight people meets every morning at 11:00 to discuss and taste various Cognacs. In fact, they sample between 7,000-8,000 each and every year. Now, who wouldn’t want that job? Discover more about the intricate (and long) journey to becoming a member of the Hennessy Tasting Committee in our article, Cognac Expert’s Visit to Hennessy Cognac. Different lines produce cognac, and some of the most popular are Hennessy, Remy Martin, and Courvoisier.

The best brandy brands you may want to add to your collection or get to try for any occasion are listed above. Hennessy, Martell, and Giffard are great brandy brands to try.
