This subgenre of thriller revolves around a lawyer or legal team that seeks to protect their client from the antagonist’s legal team through utilization and study of the legal system. In this story, we begin with a single passage and branch out, offering choice and multiplicity in the passages the reader visits next. The playful excitement of going north or south remains intact. But rather than branching infinitely, the passages converge at important plot points, passing the reader through a series of choke points, or gates. As an emerging genre, slipstream has been described as non-realistic fiction with a postmodern sensibility. It is meant to evoke a sense of “otherness” or cognitive dissonance in the audience.
