Even the direct-out sounds good. There’s a setting in the Tone Studio where you can set the ‘feel’ of the direct out. There’s ‘rec’, which has a built in cabinet simulator for recording. The cabinet sim is very good, but if you want to use your own, you can use the ‘live’ setting. There’s also a ‘blend,’ which is exactly what it says: a blend between the two. It’s easy to lose yourself in the powerful features onboard the Katana MkII. Still, don’t neglect the rear panel. That’s where you’ll find the connectivity to hook up these flexible amps with anything from PAs to DAW software. These options can blow your creative possibilities wide open. For recording, you can plug the headphone out into your audio interface, or you can go direct with USB. Both sound very good, but if you use the USB, the signal will be very quiet, which can be a problem. Standby means the Katana amp is powered on, though the onboard speaker is disabled. This is the perfect setting for late-night recording/ practice sessions. 0.5w is perfect for when you are playing at low volume and still require the tone of a pushed guitar amp. 25w is ideal for quiet rehearsals and jamming with other musicians, whereas 50w will enable you to compete with a drummer and use it in live situations.

The Katana has a unique streamlined design. The looks of the amp are very minimal, which means you could easily walk past this in a music store – but it’s so popular that the chances of that happening are slim. There’s just one thing… Boss makes quite a few different variations of the Katana, and every one of them is a little different. It raises the question: “Which should I get?”. I've been guitaring 40+ years. I've played mostly acoustics during that time, but started on and have always had electrics. I bought the 50 Mk II in hopes of having a versatile, portable, and good sounding amp. The acoustic setting was also an important feature. I've had my Katana for a couple weeks now and am very pleased. My Taylor AE sounds very good through this amp and the ability to add effects such as reverb and delay is nice. It's much lighter than my Fishman Artist - the two would make a nice pair for small acoustic/vocal venues. The Katana 50 is what we’ve been focusing on until now, but the other models are just as noteworthy.
