About this deal

Keeping those phones charged regardless of the platform is a wireless charging pad in the center armrest and two USB-A ports. Portability and Design: The DJI Mini SE lives up to its "Mini" moniker with its compact and lightweight design. It is incredibly portable, making it easy to carry along on adventures without adding significant weight to your gear. The drone's sleek and streamlined appearance further adds to its appeal. Limited Range and WiFi Connectivity: The DJI Mini SE utilizes a WiFi connection for communication between the drone and the remote controller, which can result in a more limited range compared to other DJI drones that use more advanced radio frequency technologies. The WiFi connection is susceptible to interference, especially in urban areas or areas with a high density of wireless signals, which may lead to potential signal drops or video transmission issues. Once again, there is essentially nothing to separate the drones here; they feature the same sized CMOS image sensors and the same features – well, except Panorama. The experience of getting started and into the air with the Mini SE is very similar to other DJI aircraft (like the Mavic 3 or Mini 3 Pro) because they all use the app DJI Fly. The app is equipped with a useful tutorial – made of clear animated graphics and on-screen instructions. It’s not over-the-top or boring, and leaves you far equipped to fly further than a simple video would.

The DJI Mini SE is an impressive entry-level drone quadcopter that brings the renowned DJI quality and performance to a more budget-friendly price point. As an avid drone enthusiast, I was excited to test out this compact marvel, and it exceeded my expectations in many ways. Obstruction Sensitivity: Due to its reliance on WiFi connectivity, the Mini SE can be obstructed by large objects like trees, buildings, or houses. This obstruction sensitivity may limit its usability in certain environments, particularly when flying in areas with significant obstacles or structures that could disrupt the WiFi signal. Pilots need to exercise extra caution and maintain a clear flight path to ensure a stable connection and avoid potential signal disruptions during flights. Everything else is standard Mini inside, from the central 8.8-inch infotainment display to the iconic toggle switches between the sun visors and below the climate controls. Video is captured at either 2.7K 30fps (that’s 2720 x 1530 pixels) or 1080p at up to 60fps. As a low-resolution ‘economy’ option, this is better than you might expect. The bitrate is 40Mbps, which is also a bit lower than some, especially since the only compression algorithm option is H.264, not H.265. As such, the Mini Cooper SE delivers the same funky yet charming retro design Minis are famous for. And while BMW has updated the Mini's design several times over the last twenty years, it's still full of whimsy and character. We already looked at the gimbal, and this is a good point to reiterate that resolution is only one measure of the quality of drone video. Video is stable and 2.7K is plenty sharp for most uses. Unlike the Mini 3, however, the camera remains horizontal, so lower resolution is exposed if cropping for vertical format. Similarly the digital zoom is more of a novelty and even at 2x will expose the limitations of a 12 megapixel sensor. Accessories must be under 30 grams. Make sure the Snap Adapter and connected devices are properly attached before takeoff. There are three flying modes: Normal, Sport and Cine. You'll need to set the drone in Sport mode to reach maximum ascend, descend and flight speeds, whereas, in Cine mode, flight speed is limited for more stable video capturing. I'd recommend using Cine mode for absolute beginners, at least until you get used to controlling the DJI Mini 2 SE. Minis are naturally agile thanks to their low center of gravity, but the battery’s additional 300 pounds compared with the curb weight of a gas-powered Mini is a noticeable hindrance on handling. Mini's decision to place the battery up front in the engine compartment means the Mini SE doesn’t have a frunk. (Credit: Doug Newcomb)

The original DJI Mavic Mini still rides high in our guide to the best beginner drones and, given the DJI Mini SE is internally identical to that drone, there's no reason to expect it'll perform any differently. The instrument panel presents info clearly but is limited in functionality. It doesn’t have the customization options available on other EVs in this class that let you tailor the view to your liking, and we found the display was easily washed out in bright sunlight and often hard to read. Our test car came standard with a head-up display, but it’s a low-end type that uses a small plastic panel on the dash as a secondary display instead of projecting the information onto the windshield. The DJI Mini SE was never going to offer all the goodies of the DJI Mini 2 for a lower price, and that's certainly proven to be the case. The Mini SE is equally at home around town. Its small stature makes it great for urban environments where smaller is better, especially when it comes to finding parking spaces. The cabin is quiet and for the most part, smooth while cruising around town. Minimal improvements like this come with improvements to motors or just the software driving them (both drones use identical propellors, too). It is worth noting, though, that in both cases the maximum flight time is measured at constant forward travel; hovering actually uses more power so drains the battery a little faster. In both cases, DJI offer the drone and a single controller or a Fly More bundle with extra spare propellors, a total of three batteries, a charging hub, and a bag. The Mini 2 SE also throws in a handy rubber propellor protector which adds an extra layer of safety, while it switches from zipped hard case to a more traditional camera bag with strap format.

I was super impressed with the flying capabilities of the DJI Mini 2 SE. Not only the drone has the same flying prowess as its more expensive sibling, the Mini 2, but it also has Level 5 wind resistance (up to 10.7 m/s or 38 km/h) and ±0.1 m vertical and ±0.3 m horizontal hovering accuracy (with vision positioning). This, combined with the superb gimbal performance, ensures that the DJI Mini 2 SE stays where you left it in the air. Secondly, these DJI drones are known for their very excellent cameras. With this drone, you are not just getting a camera for which you can see what the drone sees (a necessity for flying) but rather an aerial photography device. The camera is so good you could absolutely think of this drone as a flying camera. Really, I would rate it about as good as a point-and-shoot or an iPhone 12. Another thing to note about the camera is that it is on a gimble, so your photos and videos will be crystal clear and right on point. The colour accuracy from the drone's camera is phenomenal.

PURE UNFILTERED EXCITEMENT.

While both drones use the same battery –listed on DJI’s accessory shop as the DJI Mini 2 battery – it seems that the Mini 2 SE can squeeze an extra minute of flight time out of it. A minute isn’t a lot, but that is useful time, at least if you’re looking to get to a certain position and start capturing. If you’re just in the air for fun – and who can blame you – then take-off and landing are likely less of a chore And while adaptive cruise control is optional, there's no level 2 ADAS (advanced driver assistance system), 360 degree view, Wi-Fi hotspot, or support for OTA updates. If you're familiar with the gas-powered Cooper S, then you'll feel right at home with the Mini Cooper SE. Both cars are pretty much identical inside and out, save for a few minor cosmetic tweaks. User-Friendly Flight Experience: The Mini SE is an ideal drone for beginners and recreational users. DJI's Flight Tutorial app guides new pilots through setup and basic flight maneuvers, ensuring a smooth learning curve. The intuitive remote control enhances the overall user experience, making it easy to control the drone with confidence.

Light as a Smartphone - Weighing less than 0 55lbs / 249 grams, DJI Mini SE is roughly the same weight as the smartphone. In the United States and Canada, you can fly this camera drone without the need to register your drone with the local government..Operating Temperature Range - 0° to 40°C (32° to 104°F). Operating Frequency[2] - Model MT2SS5: 5.725-5.850 GHz, Model MT2SD25: 2.400-2.4835 GHz, 5.725-5.850 GHzStable and Smooth Flight Performance: Despite its smaller size, the DJI Mini SE boasts impressive flight stability, even in moderate wind conditions. The drone's GPS capabilities and altitude hold feature contribute to smooth and steady aerial shots, making it suitable for capturing high-quality images and videos.
