About this deal

They will still flower on slightly less sun but to give them the light they crave, even if you have to stake. Watch your sunflowers bloom in late summer and take note of the many beneficial pollinators and other creatures that visit them. Bees, butterflies, and more wildlife are attracted to the bright yellow petals and brown centers full of pollen.

I planted eight of the Mongolian Giant Sunflowers along my fence where they were sure to receive plenty of sun. The plants were growing well until they reached about two to three feet high. Sunflowers need protection at different stages of growth, but that’s especially true once you’ve just planted the seed. Mice, birds, slugs and other critters will be getting a delicious feast if you forget to cover your seeds, and you’ll be left wondering why none of your seeds germinated. You’re not the only one waiting for the sunflowers to ripen.

The young buds of sunflowers move every day from east to west to face the sun, finally settling on facing east when the flowers open. This gives sunflower fields an astonishing regularity with all flowers pointing in the same eastwards direction. This growth movement of plants in response to the sun is called “heliotropism”, from the Greek helios for sun. To sow your sunflowers, simply press your seeds about one inch into the ground and about 6 to 8 inches apart (if you’re planning on thinning them, more on this below) or about 20 inches apart if you’re not oversowing. Pike’s Peak Sunflower plants grow up to 15 feet tall. The flower heads are about 14″ wide and contain very long edible seeds. Pike’s Peak Sunflowers take about 100 days (3.3 months) to reach maturity after planting the seeds. 7. Sunzilla sunflower Sunflowers can be direct-seeded or transplanted. Direct-seeding can be easily done with a walk-behind planter like our Hoss Garden Seeder. We recommend using a #3 seed plate and modifying the hole size to fit the variety being planted.
