About this deal

The open moorland results from a long history of human management and its diversity is maintained by cattle, pony and sheep grazing. On clear days in the distance you can see Plymouth Sound. It affords indeed a beautiful example of the way a popular tradition may at once preserve and disguise matter of authentic fact.” Finberg,1946

Though she never returned, the legend of her disappearance would intrigue the imaginations of travellers for years to come. From Fernworthy Forest to Wistman's Wood, Nun's Cross, The Dewerstone, and many more - Dartmoor really does have some spooky-looking scenes, and some of them are wreathed in legend. Current Projects". Dartmoor National Park Authority. 1 December 2005. Archived from the original on 28 October 2008 . Retrieved 8 March 2009. Finberg, summarising Wiliam of Malmesbury, describes this later Ordulf (who he refers to as Ordul II), as a man of great strength and gigantic stature, who was also passionately fond of the chase. He explains that … Minibus 16 seater. Devon is using a minibus service which will run continuously throughout the day roughly every 20 minutes until course closure. You can walk a stretch of it east of Nun's Cross Farm. I would think that Nun’s Cross, or to give its correct name, Siward’s Cross must be about the best known of Dartmoor’s granite crosses. It can be classified as a ‘wayside cross’ as it marks the old monastic Maltern Way amongst other things. It is certainly the largest of the wayside crosses of Dartmoor and more than likely the oldest – see ill.11 here . In 2005, the Dartmoor National Park Authority had an ongoing project to microchip the most vulnerable of its granite artifacts, including crosses, to deter theft and aid the recovery of any that might be stolen. [3] Legend [ edit ] Detail of Bennett's Cross These jokes range from innocent puns to more risqué humor and have been passed down through generations. While some may find them inappropriate or offensive, others see them as a way to inject some humor into a traditionally serious topic. According to Hemery (1983), Nun’s Cross is first recorded with a place name in 1699 as Nannacross, but the farm is a relatively new addition to the landscape. Hemery talks with admiration of the first farmer here, John Hooper who, in 1870 leased the land from the Duchy and …A map found at the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office, and dated 1916, indicates that it was proposed to erect a PCWW stone in the position indicated by the BSs on the later maps. While discrepancies have been found with this map it is totally reasonable to expect a stone to have been erected at this location and this is confirmed by the OS maps. The Dartmoor crosses are a series of stone crosses found in Dartmoor National Park in the centre of Devon, England. Many of them are old navigational aids, needed because of the remoteness of the moorland and its typically bad weather. Some mark medieval routes between abbeys. [1] Other crosses were erected as memorials, for prayer, as town or market crosses, in churchyards, and as boundary markers. [2] The crosses were erected over a long period of time, some as recently as 100 years ago, the earliest probably almost 1,000 years ago.

Many legends and superstitions surround the nearby area. It was said Crazywell Pool was bottomless and that waters of the pool were able to predict the next monk to die. There was also said to be a witch, who haunted the place and gave people bad advice. Legend says she advised Piers Gaveston, a possible lover of Edward II, to return to king's court after being banished to Ireland telling him that "his humbled head shall soon be high". Instead, he was captured by the king's enemies and beheaded and his head was set up on high battlements. The farm was built by hand in the 1870s by a gentleman named John Hooper and his wife. They used what little capital they had to lease the land from the Duchy of Cornwall and constructed their dwelling out of stones collected by hand. This is where the history of Nun's Cross Farm gets spooky - and makes me question my decision to venture up here.

Overview

The building is said to have been used by the Royal Navy as a training base in around the 1960s and 70s.
