The Rat God is conspicuously absent for a period of time after this event. Heart, having figured out the true nature of Mad Rat's strange behavior, is able to prove to the protagonist that he has been experiencing dramatic hallucinations (including his "revenge" on the human). The two soon discover that other, Stray Rats are being "guided" via hallucinations to "cheese" (i.e., cats) by the Rat God as well (reference to how The Cat looks like a piece of cheese before killing the other stray rats), calling into question the sincerity of her motivations.
