About this deal

Arriving in Florida, the Nomes help themselves to hotel food while Arnold is in the shower. Coming out unexpectedly, he sees Masklin, but they escape into the surrounding Everglades where they discover another group of Nomes led by Shrub (that is her name) and her son Pion. Initially they do not understand each other, but The Thing is able to translate; the new group of Nomes speak authentic Nomish, the original language of the Nomes. The nomes are the intelligent people here, though some of them have their suspicions about the humans, who may sound weird and mooing but look disturbingly similiar to themselves - only so much bigger. Basically, these three short novels tell the story of a group of gnomes trying to live their tiny lives in a big world. In the first book, a group of gnomes living in a department store believe that the store is the entire world and there is no "outside." The world was created by Arnold Brothers, Est. 1905. Then a couple of outsiders make their way into the store and inform them that they need to leave because the store will be demolished in 21 days. Edward Douglas, Edward Douglas (10 September 2008). "Exclusive: Danny Boyle Getting Animated?". ComingSoon.net . Retrieved 23 July 2011. The store itself is due for demolition, can the new arrivals convince those nomes who for generations believed the store was there sole existence have their viewpoint changed?

Masklin the Nome and his companions flee their unsustainable motorway-verge home and discover an alien race of tiny Humans known as Nomes living in a department store scheduled for demolition. Things are complicated by the store Nomes' religion, which states 'The Store' consists of the entire universe, and denies the existence of the 'outside'. I didn't find it as funny or well-plotted as his Discworld books, but it was only his second attempt at a YA book. And Nation was awesome, if not comical at all.

Predominantly written as a children's book in the late eighties, this fun adventure can be enjoyed by all ages. That old softie, how absolutely right he is. I must have been eleven when I read this and I remember it being a little challenging but vivid and eye-opening. Whole sections felt wonderfully familiar and the entire climax I recalled as if I read it just a couple years ago. It's a book that inspires a fascination with language and the willingness to challenge dubious information. It's funny that Harlan Ellison, a name I of course didn't recognize, would have this quote on here. I actually gasped when I turned the book around and saw his name, someone who, in my 20s, was another obsession. I loved this book is what I'm saying. It hides some really great messages in a hilarious fable, what else can you ask for? This book is the first in a series of three books and was recommended to me by her and she said, "You are going to love these." She was absolutely right. While reading the whole time I kept thinking I want to write books like these. Forget the huge daunting novel. How about a short, quirky, hilarious, and fun short series for older kids? I think I can do that. Arnold, William (20 November 2008). "Q & A: Director Danny Boyle says he's happy in the 'Slum' ". Seattle Post-Intelligencer . Retrieved 23 July 2011.
