About this deal

All current and previous generation derailleurs are of the Shadow RD type. This includes the 12-speed derailleurs, 11-speed MTB derailleurs, and the last generation 11-speed road rear derailleurs. However, Smith has used that data to develop his own 'UltraFast' chain, which is essentially the fastest chain he's tested (Shimano's Dura-Ace CN-7901) ultrasonically cleaned and treated with a blend of paraffin wax, pure PTFE, and molybdenum sulfide lubricants. This recipe produces, Smith says, provides the lowest consistently measureable frictional losses of everything he's tested.

The front upper section above the lever pivot is fully enclosed, an aesthetic departure from previous years. Despite the concealed housing’s additional bend, cable friction is only slightly increased over 7800’s more direct route. Add in Shimano’s typical Light Action feel and you get a slightly more vague and disconnected feel than before but rear shift performance is still on par with 7800 overall if not quite as crisp. Chain movement across the cassette, though, is impeccably smooth – aided in part by the new asymmetrical chain – and full-power shifts are as reliable as ever in spite of the curiously flexy carbon rear derailleur cage. Power Loss vs distance travelled among different lubricants. Results from an independent, single lube application, double blind test where the test chains were appropriately prepared by Zero Friction Cycling* then numbered and sent directly to Wheel Energy company to conduct a friction test at 250W resistance, 100rpm cadence, 40km/h speed, 25deg C and 25% humidity. The test continued until chain reached 10W losses. Chains and testing machine had around 50km warmup/break-in period. (* "Muc-off Nano" was a factory NTC chain) For absolute maximum Racing performance where every watt counts, re-lube (by dripping) every 600km or sooner in dry conditions and after every wet ride. If you race, apply a day before the race.s braking performance is definitely superior to 7800 with a snappier and more fluid lever feel plus noticeable improvements in power and modulation. Many readers have lamented the revised cable pull ratio on 7900 – thus sullying the idea of mixing groups – but if that is what was required to get this level of performance, so be it.

The reality is that there’s no demand for mechanical from the pros who race on Dura-Ace, and it’s certainly waning on the consumer side too. For everyday riding you can re-lube (by dripping) between 900-1200km in dry road conditions and after 3-4 rides in wet conditions or when you hear chain becomes dry. For Shimano chains in particular, pay attention to the text and logos on the chain. These will be on one side of the chain only, and that side should be facing out (away from the frame). Part of Smith's Ultrafast formula includes running Dura-Ace chains through these ultrasonic cleanersPrice Matches may only be honored on identical items. The product must be the same make and model (i.e., the same size, color, year, etc.). Dura-Ace R9200 is, as expected, showing signs of being an exceptionally good groupset. Max Wilman / Immediate Media The R9250 rear derailleur can pair directly via Bluetooth with Shimano’s E-Tube app on a phone or tablet, for example, allowing for customisation of the groupset from the off. The Di2 shift buttons are more offset than previously and are designed to be easier to differentiate from one another when you’re wearing gloves. There’s still a ‘hidden’, user-assignable button on top of each lever hood.

R9270 is semi-wireless. The levers are wireless and powered by small coin cells, while the two derailleurs are wired directly into the central battery using new, thinner SD-300 wires. Ultegra RD-R8150 (12-speed), RD-R8050-GS (medium cage), RD-R8050-SS (short cage), RD-RX805 (clutch) Shimano says it’s reduced the amount of free stroke in the brake levers and they now benefit from Servo Wave, which makes the relationship between lever travel and pad travel non-linear.

This test reveals how lubricant and its friction changes over driven kilometres on a single lubricant application. The higher the number the more Watts you are losing. With “wet/semi wet” lubes friction first decreases because chain gets drier and therefore stiction decreases. Until it reaches more or less dry state – the friction then increases due to starvation of lubricant and abrasion. For “dry” lubes/films, stiction is already minimal, so they will only increase in friction due to coating wearing out. All of his tests are calibrated with a constant 250w load, a realistic mark for a rider pedaling fairly hard. Smith has also been investigating the effectiveness of chain lubricants. There, the results vary tremendously. In fact, Smith says one popular lubricant actually increases drivetrain frictional losses by five watts relative to the factory treatment. Have the two chain ends meet at the large chainring, and then add two or three links, depending on the zero point shown in Shimano’s image below:

Basically, if the point where the two chain ends meet is the ‘end’ of an outer link, add three links (left image). We speculated in our extensive Dura-Ace rumours feature as to whether Shimano would continue to produce its flagship groupset in four configurations, as it did for R9100 (mechanical and Di2, with both rim and disc brake variants). Well, the answer is no – the brand is ditching the mechanical side. Interestingly, Shimano have done the same thing that many riders criticised SRAM for including on their first-generation Force group – eliminated the trim position for the outer chainring. However, we think it unlikely anyone will complain this time around. Though we were always able to get first-gen Force to work as intended, front derailleur setup is more straightforward on 7900 and there is no cage rub with any rear cog when in the big ring. Bravo. The wattage cost for pulley systems - shown here - are among the drivetrain efficiencies Smith tests Note that these manuals are still relevant even if you’re not using a Shimano chain - they’re derailleur specific, not tied to any chain brand or type.

It would be a surprise if Dura-Ace was anything less than brilliant, and first impressions of R9200 are overwhelmingly positive. Have the two chain ends meet at the large chainring, and then add four or five links, depending on the zero point shown in Shimano’s image below: One watt – or 10 watts, for that matter – may not matter much to casual riders just out to enjoy the day, but that sort of 'free speed' is a huge deal to the right audience. speed full-suspension mountain bikes require slightly longer chains. The difference is just one link. Here is Shimano's recommended sizing method for full-suspension bikes. We expected it to be at least partly wireless, and it is. We were sure it would be 12-speed, and it is.
