About this deal

The more I think about it, the less prepared I realise I am. Despite years of walking and camping on Dartmoor, I’ve never wild camped alone before. Sure, I’ve been in a tent on my own hundreds of times, but there’s always been someone else nearby. Odd that it’s never happened and fitting, I feel, to break that never on Dartmoor. Ger Tor. Situated high above the tail of Tavy Cleave in the west section of the National Park. Stunning views. OS Explorer OL28, Harveys Dartmoor North (better marking of bogs), or OpenStreetMap (good for paths and bogs)

The nationally and internationally rare flax-leaved St John’s-wort can be found in its largest British population on the scree slopes of the upper Teign valley. Roos Tor.Roos is the northernmost tor in a cluster of outcrops on the western side of Dartmoor National Park. It's near the stunning and much photographed Great Staple Tor and overlooks Langstone Moor with its stone circle, standing stone and stone row. Great Mis Tor dominates to the east. The view north along the flank of the high moor to Great Links Tor is beautiful. All of the routes state their level of difficulty and give an outline of the routes, so that you are fully informed before you even leave the house.Dartmoor National Park was one of the first National Parks established in 1951, and it sits slap bang in the middle of Devon so it's easy to reach from north, south, east or west.

East Dartmoor consists of 3 joined but distinct areas: Yarner Wood, Trendlebere Down and the Bovey Valley Woodlands. Together they provide an excellent example of internationally important western oakwood with its associated bird and lower plant communities.

Cox Tor.Awesome views. Great place from which to watch the sun set over the Westcountry. Very easily accessible from a large car parking area on the western edge of Dartmoor's high moor. Cox Tor is also superb as part of a circular walk taking in Roos Tor and The Staple Tors.

Demand for the Dartmoor Tors Compendium continues, making it a regular on a Dartmoor book shelf. Retail outlets for the book continue to grow; it is now available in regional book shops and National Trust shops. The route is a circuit, of roughly 330 miles (measured with string on a 1:50,000 OS map). I’ll be going to each tor once and only once, not leaving the Open Access Land where possible. If you are new to Dartmoor, you should do a few training days here first to acclimatise to the terrain. Following the Burrator and Sheeps Tor Circular Walk will take you around the reservoir and up to the top of the tor for a picturesque hike. Belstone Tor (Belstone Tors and Tors End). A stunning ridgeline of tors near the pretty Dartmoor village Belstone. Very easily accessible and essential visiting if you're a keen walker.Great Links Tor. Beast of a tor dominating the westflank of Dartmoor. Provides sensational views of Dartmoor's north moor, the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Cornwall.

The overlap between the routes listed is to allow the teams to be spread evenly. The routes to be allocated will be announced a couple of weeks before the Challenge. High Willhays 621m (highest point on Dartmoor's north moor. Also highest point in southern England). The Dewerstone. The Dewerstone is a well-known beauty spot in the southern section of Dartmoor National Park. It's at the south west end of the Dewerstone Valley. Fur Tor. As above. One for keen walkers and Dartmoorenthusiasts, Fur Tor is located in the heart of the National Park's north moor. Sensational views. Lastly, there is a small selection of tors where access is either denied or, more commonly, the outcrop has been left unkempt/forgotten about, sometimes in woodland, with little sign of a landowner looking after it. I do not encourage or support trespassing, but in rare cases, it is the only option if the tor is to be bagged. If you ever consider doing this, and I wouldn't, then Leave No Trace, leave everything as you found it, and respect that it's not your land, and if you are challenged admit defeat and leave the scene promptly.Dartmoor is full of surprises and unexpected hidden gems, but often you need to be with someone who knows the secrets or you may well miss out! See our guides listed here. Just into Dartmoor National Park and a few miles from Ivybridge, this ancient section of woodland is a well-kept secret amongst local residents and frequent visitors, so an ideal spot if you’re looking to escape the summer crowds for a morning or afternoon.
