Simply breathtaking scope and settings and the music hits your soul. This article needs additional citations for verification. Vita and the Gladiator is rich in detail, with the descriptions of Roman food, clothing and entertainment helping to bring to life this turning point in British history. Readers who are keen to move on from the Horrible Histories series will find a lot to enjoy in this book, with its skilful blend of historical insight and personal drama. The historical notes at the end provide a fascinating additional insight into Roman Britain.

But the thing that really let me down the most was the writing. I felt that the speech and mannerisms in this book were far too modern for the setting. It’s set in Ancient Rome and yet the characters spoke with modern day slang. It just didn’t fit with the time period and I could not sink into the story as much as I wanted to. After success in the last book, and as this is a series, we do expect success by the end of the novel, it is time to make our way home to Rome and for the heroes to get their rewards. Macro and Cato have been stepping up and giving great needed service to Rome, and Claudius and they deserve accolades. So I know going into a series without reading the previous books may be bad but I was unprepared for how unconnected I was with the main characters in this novel. Right off the bat, Cato and Macro did nothing for me. They were pretty predictable and I couldn’t completely get a feel for them. The action was okay if again predictable and sort of unimaginative. Sinopsis: Se trata de la venganza de un general de las legiones romanas llamado Máximo, el cual era tan querido por el Emperador que le quería mas que a su propio hijo, ya que ensalzaba los valores de Roma, honor, lealtad humildad. I have never read a book that was this "preachy," however, I did not mind it. In fact, I thought the lessons learned throughout the book were very valuable. While most people would not forgive, and want to harm others, Pelonia was very forgiving and did not want to harm anyone, even if they harmed her.

Overall I found the book to be interesting and it does feel like each chapter builds on the previous one, though I did find some chapters spoke to me more than others - such as the finding the balance between the athlete and the normal person as I do struggle to switch off at times myself. However I did also find the challenges that are set at the end of each chapter for you to put into practice what you learnt to be not very unique as I have seen them in other places on YouTube before. In this tale Cato and Macro are returning home to Rome from their campaign against the Parthians, but when nearing home soil their transport ship will encounter a tidal wave and nearly get capsized. However that night, tragedy strikes. Vita’s father is killed and Vita, still dressed as a slave, is taken captive. Mourning her father and with no way of finding out what happened to her mother and brother, Vita finds herself sharing a cell with the fierce Brea and her semi-tame wolf in the terrifying gladiator training grounds. This was a romance and so much more. Carla brings us to 81 AD when to be a Christian was a lot more than just a phrase. It was life and death. It was unique to visit this Roman era. In 73 BCE, forty gladiators escape from the school at Capua belonging to Lentulus Batiatus. Armed with stolen weapons and armour, they flee southwards and engage in a vengeful campaign of plunder and killing. Dozens of followers are attracted to their cause, including runaway slaves, freemen, idealistic townsfolk, and even entire families. Leadership falls nominally to Spartacus, a Thracian ex-soldier, and his friend Crixus, a Gaul tribesman. Crowe portrays Hispano-Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius, who is betrayed when Commodus, the ambitious son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, murders his father and seizes the throne. Reduced to slavery, Maximus rises through the ranks of the gladiatorial arena to avenge the murders of his family and his emperor. Besides that, I wasn’t rooting for the main heroes. Instead, I was in support of the antagonists. I mean, Cato and Macro are fighting against a slave revolt. Am I supposed to side with the slave masters? Hell nope. I know the presence of slavery in the story was just indicative of the times and I get that. But I don’t understand how the author expected me to root for characters that are fighting against freedom?

I love historical fiction books, so of course, this one I loved for that reason alone. For some reason, I just love this time period and reading about that past. I also thought the author did a great job of writing the story. All around, it was very well written. The only part I didn't like was the fact that it kept changing to a different character without any cues, however, I got used to it after about half way through the book. I really enjoyed reading this book, I just really did not like the few things mentioned above. You're in love with a Christian, but you've killed her kind. Now you're laboring with the question of how to win her affection without having to admit your guilt or share her faith." I also liked the developing secondary romance between Quintus, a slave who is being trained as a gladiator by Caros, and Adiona, Caros’ seemingly hardened widow friend. In a way, she is like a male version of Caros. She seems hard and cruel, but down deep, she hides wounds that keep her from living a full life. I have a feeling that Quintus will bring love into her life.
