About this deal

Separate your laundry: Keep your whites and colors separate to prevent bleach from accidentally splashing onto your colored clothing. It’s important to make sure that the fabric is completely dry before using or washing it again. In addition to ensuring that the fabric is dry, it’s also important to avoid washing it for at least 24 hours after dyeing. This allows the dye to fully set and bond with the fabric fibers. To assess the damage, examine the fabric in a well-lit area. Look for any areas where the fabric has turned white or lighter in color than the surrounding areas. You may also notice that the affected areas are lighter in texture or feel thinner than the rest of the fabric.

This ensures that the color sets properly and reduces the risk of smudging or bleeding. Go slightly past the edges of the bleached area Put a dust mask on before you open the jar of dye. Most powder dyes are lung irritants, so be safe. Once you have finished applying the dye, inspect the stained area to see if it has been fully covered. If not, you may need to repeat the dyeing process or apply the dye directly to the stained area with a brush. With a little patience and effort, your garment will look as good as new! Let the Dye Set Depending on your fabric, you may wish to follow the in-sink rinse with a run through the washing machine, or even just pop it in for a spin cycle, but the rest is up to you.

Pre-Treating and Prepping the Bleached Fabric

You can help the fabric absorb dye more evenly and vibrantly by agitating your dye bath throughout the dye process, to ensure the dye is absorbed deep into the fibers. You’ll want to work with more dye than you think you need, and in a dye tub or pot that’s also larger than you think you’ll need to allow your denim to swim freely. Dye activator: Citric Acid or White Vinegar (from your local supermarket, both work equally well) for protein fibers, or Salt and Soda Ash for cellulose fibers. By extending the pigment slightly, you can blend it into the surrounding fabric and make the repair less noticeable. Just be careful not to overdo it and make the area look too dark or unnatural. Blend the pigment gently with a finger or brush Pro Tip: If you’re working with a delicate or lightweight fabric, consider placing a piece of cardboard or a plastic sheet underneath the stained area. This will prevent the pen from bleeding through to the other side and staining the surface below. Fabric marker pens are just what you need to add an artistic touch to fabric tote bags, plain t-shirts or tablecloths. JOANN offers fabric pens in a range of colors and brands to give your fabric projects a personalized touch. Use our fabric dye markers to add unique patterns to your creations or our neon fabric markers to add a fun colorful touch to your party outfits. Some of the brands in our collection include Tulip, Cosplay and Marvy Uchida.

When applying the fabric pen, use short, directional strokes to build up the color gradually. This technique will help you achieve a more natural-looking result. Start by lightly coloring the edges of the bleach stain and then work your way towards the center, blending the color as you go. Apply a second coat for stubborn stains Iron the fabric to remove any wrinkles and creases. This will help ensure that the dye is evenly absorbed by the fabric. Kat has been sewing since her feet could reach the pedals, starting with quilts she made with her mom and eventually graduating to garments. She now makes everything she wears, occasionally teaches classes, and shares her projects on social media. Highlights include her wedding dress, shoemaking, and a love for almost any fabric that comes in hot pink! You’ll want to pay extra attention to the dye bath (agitating constantly and monitoring the temperature) for the first 20 minutes, but after that you can taper off, turning down the heat and stirring less frequently for a few hours. You can turn off the heat and allow it to sit overnight if required.

For example, if our item’s dry weight is 150g, and we need 2% dye, the formula is (2×150)/100 for 3g of dye. Stir the garment continuously for 10-15 minutes to ensure the dye is evenly distributed and fully absorbed.Use alternative cleaning agents: Bleach isn’t the only cleaning agent out there. Consider using alternatives such as hydrogen peroxide or vinegar, which are less likely to cause bleach stains. Over time, the color applied with the fabric pen may fade or wear off, especially after washing. To maintain the desired color and appearance, periodically touch up the affected areas as needed. This will keep your garment looking fresh and help prolong its lifespan. If you want to avoid the maths, Dharma Trading has a calculator that tells you how much dye to use based on the dye color and the weight of the item. After this has dissolved, add the cup of pre-mixed dye in the same way – pushing the fabric to the side to avoid pouring it directly. This helps to avoid dark splotches. Mix thoroughly. You can swish a bit of extra hot water in your dye cup and add it to your dye bath to make sure you get it all. Step 7: Stir frequently until the dye is absorbed. Turn off the heat. Rit recommends using twice the usual recommended amount of dye for the weight of your fabric, and doubling the recommended time it spends in the dye bath, as well as using the post-dye Color-Stay Dye Fixative.
