The vast majority of the time, Mum and Dad believe Peter rather than Henry, being best known for disciplining Henry, particularly with the phrase: 'Don't be horrid, Henry!'. They often force Henry to locations such as his room if he is not well behaved, or they utterly say, 'GO TO YOUR ROOM NOW, HENRY!'. His parents often punish him for the slightest things.

In the television series, Henry is noticeably more tame and human, particularly after series 2, whereas in the books, he is much more horrid and appears to have almost no redeeming qualities, often displaying some sociopathic traits. A man who's very identity is described even before his name is given to us. He is not the only character to be named with an overly-simplified, alliterated characteristic; brothers, arch-nemeses and friends alike are all named like this: Perfect Peter, Moody Margaret, Rude Ralph etc. Truly, from names alone we understand that simplified identity will be the core difficulty our protagonist will have to face in his oncoming misadventures. Emil and the Detectives by Erich Kastner is a total classic and thrilling read, or what about the irreverant Tapper Twins books by Geoff Rodkey. Gene Kemp's The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tileris also excellent (look out for the twist!)

Horrid Henry is the first book of the Horrid Henry series. It was published in 1994 and written by Francesca Simon and illustrated by Tony Ross. Whereas Mum would tell Henry not to be horrid just for joking or being sarcastic which is why Henry does not get along with her, however she truly does care about her son and love him deep down.
