About this deal

From twinkling lights to famous shopping streets, waterfront areas to hipster neighborhoods, these night walks in London will take you to some of my favorite places in the UK capital after the sun goes down. This is the daily, or nightly, reality of post-circadian capitalism, as it might be called. For the city’s army of nocturnal workers, many of whom are recent immigrants forced to perform the least popular forms of labour, travelling at night is in effect travailing at night. Sex workers and the police (or its precursors) have, for their part, always had to patrol pavements at night for professional reasons. So have street-cleaners and others employed to collect and dispose of the city’s waste. There was also Thomas De Quincey, whose “opium-tinctured nightwalks” helped to produce his characteristically digressive prose style, with its “drifting, shifting metaphors and its unpredictable accretion of clauses”, which “mimics the city’s labyrinthine logic, its unnerving transitions from one social identity to another, its dead ends and its sudden openings”. All three challenges are linear walks starting and finishing in the village of Llanberis. You will be walking for about 9 miles/14.5km and climb a total of 3560 feet/ 975 metres during your walk.

Snowdonia National Park is one of only 18 International Dark Sky Reserves in the world, offering a rare opportunity to escape light pollution and soak up the magic of a truly dark sky. Our experienced Mountain leaders regularly run Snowdon by Night walks, guiding hikers carefully along paths they know intimately. It’s a powerful experience that will connect you with your fellow walkers, the mountain itself and nature for an unforgettable experience. Take a moment to turn off torches and see if you can spot the milky way! This book was really really good! It gives you a unique insight into what it's like to be a mother, and while I've read several novels on family life and the stress that can come with it, I've never read anything like this. I hope my list of evening walks has made you want to get outside and discover the best of London at night. Whether you’re alone, with a friend, or part of a group, these routes will help you explore some of my favorite places in the UK capital. Happy walking!

Chris’s existing and extensive fan-base, the anglers, will find a freedom in Nightwalk…I believe this is [his] finest work to date…What is certain, though, is that Nightwalk will delight for many, many years to come.’ Kevin Parr, Caught By the River For Matthew Beaumont, Eliot’s travellers, their “eyes fixated on their feet”, are the antithesis of the modernist spirit, closed off from the creative possibilities of the city’s myriad surprises. In contrast, Mrs Dalloway and Leopold Bloom are unconsciously alert to its ever-shifting mood, which impinges imaginatively on their own. If you’re interested, you can find the directions, map, photos, and video for this one on my blog post about a Harry Potter walking tour. In his poem “London”, William Blake sees indistinctly because he walks the street by night; but he sees enough to make out the “marks of weakness, marks of woe” on everyone’s faces (“crude signatures of an oppressive, rapaciously commercial society”, Beaumont says), and his hearing is acute enough to catch “the youthful Harlot’s curse” blasting the new-born and “the Marriage hearse”.

The setting is an isolated island in the Hebrides. Anna Bennett, her two kids, and husband have moved here so that hubby can count the puffins. Anna, a historian, in unable to get any work done as she is sleep deprived, and has her hands full with motherly and wifely duties. One day while digging in the garden the bones of an infant are uncovered. Whose bones are these?A child explores her neighborhood on a late-night walk with her dad, finding delight and comfort in moments of quiet and the warm windows into other people’s lives. When a little girl can’t sleep one night, her dad asks if she’d like to go for a walk. They tiptoe through the silent house and step out into the dark. It’s strange and exciting to be out so late. Walking down the street, the girl can see inside the lit-up windows of apartment buildings and houses where people’s lives are unfolding. Kids are having a pillow fight in one house, while a family has gathered for a festive meal in another. She and her dad reach the still-busy shopping area, walking past restaurants and enticing store windows, then stop for a tranquil moment in the park before returning home. Sara O’Leary has captured a child’s nighttime wonder as she explores her neighborhood and comes to the comforting realization that she belongs. Ellie Arscott’s illustrations, luminous and rich in color, perfectly complement the story. Correlates to the Common Core State Standards in English Language CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.6
