About this deal

Since Mrs. Metalious sees her community in this a lurid light, she has the inalienable right to say so. I have the inalienable right to find it all incredible, and it’s right I hereby emphatically exercise. It’s always fascinating to read books that were deemed controversial in an earlier age. Doing so provides a unique insight into a society’s mores, its conception of itself, and its fears. Plus, it’s super amusing to find out what gave your parents, or your grandparents, or your great-grandparents the vapors, especially since the goalpost on those things have moved so dramatically in the last hundred years. After Metalious's death, Peyton Place resurfaced as the setting for nine novels by Don Tracy (1905–1976), writing as Roger Fuller, including Evils of Peyton Place (1969) and Temptations of Peyton Place (1970), but this series had only modest sales. [6]

She insisted Peyton Place was based on several places in New Hampshire – including Durham, where her husband attended the University of New Hampshire; Gilmanton, where he taught school; and Laconia, where her favorite bar was located. Peyton Place, The Book Yes, even by today's standards this book is quite the scandalous read. I've heard it spoken of with winks and nudges since I was a kid, and finally decided to read it and . . . . well! Affairs, abortions, drunken benders, legal and political machinations, unhappy marriages, abuse, swears, religious crises, it's all there! Peyton Place seems like a nice, quiet little town, until you peer behind the curtains, and then the ugly underbelly is revealed. The book was highly addictive, told in a gossipy style that was like reading a tabloid or listening to a nosy neighbor dish the dirt. This is really a shame, but fortunately the book has been re-evaluated by scholars and contemporary cultural critics. “ The Forgotten Legacy of Grace Metalious and Peyton Place” is an excellent place to begin. Of French-Canadian ancestry, she was born Marie Grace De Repentigny in Manchester, New Hampshire. Her parents separated when she was ten years old. Suffering from cirrhosis of the liver from years of heavy drinking, Metalious died on February 25, 1964, at age 39. "If I had to do it over again", she once said, "it would be easier to be poor. Before I was successful, I was as happy as anyone gets." [9] She is buried in Smith Meeting House Cemetery in Gilmanton. Both women were compelling and I would have given this book 5 stars if it had been longer and gone into more depth about Grace and Barbara instead of the rushed endings. Toth, Emily (1981). Inside Peyton Place: The Life of Grace Metalious. Univ. Press of Mississippi. p.96. ISBN 978-1-60473-631-1. Metalious's publisher promoted her in a photo captioned "Pandora in Blue Jeans". [6] Commenting on her critics, she observed, "If I'm a lousy writer, then an awful lot of people have lousy taste". [7] Of her work's frankness, she said, "Even Tom Sawyer had a girlfriend, and to talk about adults without talking about their sex drives is like talking about a window without glass." [8] Later works [ edit ] I knew that the Peyton Place book was based on a true story. However, I could never have guessed at just how incredible the story of the murder of Sylvester Roberts would be. His daughter eventually confessed to the crime. She was sentenced to a prison term, although after a length of time, she changed her plea from Not Guilty to Guilty. This plea was changed to protect her younger brother. Many felt that her brother had a hand in the murder, but from reading through the story, and drawing some conclusions on Barbara herself, I have no doubt that she was capable of the killing, and of course, of moving and hiding the body, without the aid of her brother. They lived on a farm, and from a young age, she was used to the hard manual labor. Her father and older brothers were often away from home as they were Merchant Marines.

Her novels are now being rediscovered in Women’s Studies courses in colleges and universities. Peyton Place is considered a major landmark in literature that reflects small town America in the World War II era. (The story begins in 1939, and not, as is widely believed, in the 1950s.) A reporter once asked Grace if she thought Peyton Place would last. She said, ‘Oh no, I don’t think so.’ She was wrong. Time and significant changes in American social structure are placing Peyton Place in a new perspective. After more than 50 years the book is getting another look, and Grace is being seen as a woman who might have been ahead of her time. "Grace Metalious". St. James Encyclopedia of Pop Culture . Retrieved August 7, 2008.I noticed Renee Mallett has a number of books concerning New Hampshire hauntings and other topics. I personally think New England is one of the best places to set a creepy novel in the USA so I am planning on reading more books from this intriguing author. She was born into poverty and a broken home as Marie Grace de Repentigny in the mill town of Manchester, New Hampshire. Blessed with the gift of imagination, she was driven to write from an early age. After graduating from Manchester High School Central, she married George Metalious in 1943, became a housewife and mother, lived in near squalor — and continued to write. I don't mean to cause any offense to people who grew up in the fifties, but in a way I'm glad that I didn't come of age then. It seems hard to understand the criticisms that were thrown at this book in that time. I agree with the author when she said "to talk about adults without talking about their sex drives is like talking about a window without glass." Grace Metalious (September 8, 1924 – February 25, 1964) was an American author known for her novel Peyton Place, one of the best-selling works in publishing history.

Norman’s mother, Evelyn, becomes convinced that Allison and Norman have slept together. It isn’t true, but Constance and Evelyn force the two to confess, and they are punished. Allison slaps her mother and her mother, angered, tells her the truth about Allison’s father, calling her a bastard. Allison is upset and angry; after so many years of fantasizing about her father, the truth is devastating. Allison runs to her room and, discovering the body of Nellie Cross in her closet, screams. Nellie had found out that Lucas impregnated Selena; horrified and broken by this news, she killed herself. The suicide and the reason for it affect Constance powerfully, and she is consumed by worry that a similar fate will fall on Allison. In 2005, novelist Barbara Delinsky used Metalious and Peyton Place as a springboard for Looking for Peyton Place, her novel about the impact of Metalious's book on a small New Hampshire town, Middle River, where residents believe Peyton Place is about their community. At the time the book came out it created al sorts of havoc. Grace was the wife of a school principal, a former mill worker, with no advanced education .. and the mother of three. Peyton Place was her debut novel ... about a murder in a small town. Fox, Margalit, "Leona Nevler, Editor, Dies at 79; Shepherded Peyton Place". The New York Times, December 15, 2005.
