About this deal

The yellowing of gloss paint is such a big issue for many homeowners because of the unappealing shade that develops over time causing the once fresh and bright finish to turn dull and creates an almost dirty look to the surface. So, it’s no wonder that people looking for white gloss paint that doesn’t yellow has increased. Gloss paint is one of our favourites to use and gives you a nice, shiny finish you wouldn’t get with other types of paint. If you’re looking for something to use in your interior or exterior, this has you covered!

It’s funny, a few years ago, Johnstone’s Aqua was widely regarded as the best white water-based gloss paint available. However, comparing it to the more modern Teknos Futura 90 just outlines its flaws. It is still good, but it’s harder to apply, can damage your brushes and turns yellow after a couple of years. With the new legislation being introduced in 2010 painting manufacturers sought to find a solution to the new limits of solvent regulations in the UK. This prompted manufacturers to replace it with an increase of drying oil components to aid in the finish of gloss paint. Bit of a mad subject this. All oil-based gloss will discolour over time due to restrictions on the VOC’s (chemicals) a manufacturer is allowed to use. The oil in oil-based gloss is an alkyd, and like all alkyds, it will discolour. The best you can hope for is to get a few good years out of it before the oil in the gloss begins to bleed through. If conditions are right, you will not notice the problem of discoloration with Dulux Trade gloss. Even with a specific roller for gloss, you’ll want to lay it off with a good gloss brush once you’re done just to make sure you get that nice, smooth finish. How do you get a smooth finish with gloss paint? You may also need a sash brush, depending on how much intricate cutting in there is. These are great for the tops of skirting board or down the side of architraves. Available online here. Dulux says their range is suitable for internal and external wood and metal. Indeed, the only real downside we can find is it’s not the cheapest product on test — though it still undercuts the 250ml Rustins once you start buying in bulk. Pros Finally, if you have a period home and want to keep your skirting boards looking like natural wood, you can go for a wood-stain paint and have the dado and picture rails to match. Oil or water-based paint? There’s no requirement for an undercoat, while the coverage of 16 metres per litre means the tin we’re testing could cover 40 square metres in one go.

Johnstone’s get a rating of 5/5 for durability whilst scoring highly when it comes to ease of use and how easy it is to clean which is essential with British weather! Other than the type of finish you’re after, you’ll also have to decide whether you want oil- or water-based paint. Dulux’s entry into this list is merely one part of a vast range of products. You can choose from seven tin sizes, from 30ml tester pots to five-litre tubs. If you do decide to use a roller, you’ll want to have a specific roller at hand that’s been designed for gloss application. A regular roller is likely to leave little fibres behind during application. You need a natural bristle paintbrush to apply oil-based gloss, otherwise the paint will clog within half an hour or so. Your best bet is the Hamilton Perfection, which is an oil-school brush, but still a favourite amongst Decorators. You will be able to apply gloss paint and lay it off with ease. Available online here.

This gloss still looks brand new years after it has been applied. You may find it easier to apply the paint using a foam roller, then laying off with a brush. Keeping your brush wet, or even wiping your surfaces with a damp cloth before painting will help you avoid brush marks. The result was the yellowing of paint over time, with some gloss paints yellowing in a matter of months or even weeks after application. Not ideal when looking for a long-lasting white finish and a white gloss paint that doesn’t yellow.

Whatever your budget, whatever your taste, find the best paint for your skirting boards

This paint’s most significant attribute is its affordability. I.e. 0.75 litres of paint costs half as much as Dulux and a third as much as Rustins. If you’re not buying in bulk, that’s a compelling advantage. In some respects, our shortlist’s products aim at different markets, and direct comparisons may be disingenuous.
