About this deal

We all need each other, in our homes, in our families and especially here in our own school community.

The mouse took hold of the cat, the cat took hold of the dog, the dog took hold of the granddaughter, the granddaughter took hold of the old woman, the old woman took hold of the old man, and the old man took hold of the turnip. Reading to children is a great way to support language development. Even when a child is able to read for themselves, hearing an adult read to them is important for building confidence and expanding vocabulary. Eventually, the couple, a boy, a girl, a dog, a cat and a mouse manage to remove the turnip and for their help, the farmers invite them all to enjoy eating the enormous turnip. The Giant Turnip/El Nabo Gigante’, written by Henriette Barkow and illustrated by Richard Johnson, is a dual-language story (written in both English and Spanish) that tells the tale of a class of school children who managed to grow a fantastically large turnip! The story itself, which is of Russian origin, focuses on the importance of teamwork and togetherness. I'm going to pray now: if you'd like to make the prayer your own, then join in with 'Amen' at the end.Storytelling Props: You can easily make storytelling props using toys and supplies you’ve likely got lying around the house. The cat took hold of the dog, the dog took hold of the granddaughter, the granddaughter took hold of the old woman, the old woman took hold of the old man, and the old man took hold of the turnip. They pulled and pulled, but could not pull it out. So the cat called over the mouse. Use the story questions to help children to talk about the story and consolidate their recall of the events.

The old man started to pull the turnip out of the ground. He pulled and pulled, but could not pull it out. So he called over his wife. Play the video. The duration is 5' 29" and the final words are: '...I want to thank you all the best way I can - by sharing this turnip with all the people and animals in the village so that no-one has to go hungry this winter - not even the mice.' This colourful PowerPoint is easy to read, simple to use and great fun for all your students. If they would prefer it in an eBook format, we also have that. There are plenty of Enormous Turnip Activities for Early Years that you can call in to help out, such as this Enormous Turnip Colouring Sheet. Other stories from TwinklThe granddaughter took hold of the old woman, the old woman took hold of the old man, and the old man took hold of the turnip. They pulled and pulled, but could not pull it out. Ask the children to sit quietly and think about what they've seen and heard - and which part of the story they think was the most important for them to remember. Zer-Zion, Shelly (2019). The Gigantic Turnip" or "The Enormous Turnip" ( Russian: Репка, Repka, Ukrainian: Ріпка, Ripka, IPA: [ˈrʲepkə], literally "small turnip"; ATU 2044, ‘Pulling up the turnip') is a cumulative Russian fairy tale and Ukrainian fairy tale, collected in Arkhangelsk Governorate and published in 1863 by folklore researcher Alexander Afanasyev in his collection Russian Fairy Tales (tale number 89), a collection not strictly Russian, but which included stories from Ukraine and Belarus alongside Russian tales. [1] [2] [3] The tale is also considered a Ukrainian fairy tale, [3] [4] well-known as adapted by Ivan Franko. [5] [6] When I teach book-based lessons, I love to dig in and discover other fun “rabbit trails” to follow. The Enormous Turnip is the perfect lead into discussions about seeds, gardening, farming, vegetables, healthy eating, teamwork, and more. The Great Big Enormous Turnip– This is a story about a farmer who planted a turnip. The turnip grew so large that is took a “team” to harvest the turnip.Growing Veggies: While this post is about growing carrot tops, you could adapt it to go along with the story by growing turnip tops. A complementary resource to our The Enormous Turnip Story, this brilliant Enormous Turnip Colouring Sheet will both occupy and entertain your learners. Not only that, colouring activities such as this are great for developing concentration and fine motor skills. When using pens and pencils, children use hand-eye coordination to keep the colours within the lines, helping to hone their precision-based skills.

Garden in a Glove: When my kids were younger, we put bean seeds in a plastic baggie with a wet paper towel. We taped the baggie to the window and waited for the seeds to sprout. But, here’s a unique twist on that activity! Have your kids start a garden in a glove. Then tell them to try to get to 'their' treat - with you acting as referee to avoid any injuries. It's natural for them to work against each other - to begin with at least - with neither being able to get to the treat. Eventually, they may well work out that if they go together to one chair, then together to the other, they will achieve more than if they pull against one another. If this doesn't happen, you might need to suggest a way forward - eg 'What if you worked together?'It is retold as "The Turnip" by Barbara Suwyn in the World Folklore Series' The Magic Egg and Other Tales from Ukraine (1997), edited by Natalie Kononenko. [3] The Giant Turnip Activities: This story sequencing activity is based on one of the variations of the story, The Gigantic Turnip. Follow up with: 'We are going to share a story together now. It's a very old story that many of you will have heard before. It comes from the country of Russia - a long way from here - but it's also a story that is told all over the world.' It could be read that it is about selfless actions, being willing to help without asking what's in it for you.
