About this deal

John Hegley. I love his short, witty pieces. They’re often anecdotal, about the absurdities of everyday life, like parodies of poets doing poetry. Emphasising a key idea that is significant to the poet, or something the poet wants the reader to remember. There were–and still are–many venues (bars, restaurants, etc.) which host open mic events (which are wonderful), but there were–and still are–very few which host readings by contemporary poets and writers. The Connecticut Poetry Society was not hosting or presenting any such events, and I very much wanted to hear and present the work of poets and writers who were deeply committed to this craft. IN a lecture on “Poetry and Drama,” delivered three years ago and subsequently published in the Atlantic, I said: — newcommand{\vecs}[1]{\overset { \scriptstyle \rightharpoonup} {\mathbf{#1}}}\) \( \newcommand{\vecd}[1]{\overset{-\!-\!\rightharpoonup}{\vphantom{a}\smash{#1}}} \)\(\newcommand{\id}{\mathrm{id}}\) \( \newcommand{\Span}{\mathrm{span}}\) \( \newcommand{\kernel}{\mathrm{null}\,}\) \( \newcommand{\range}{\mathrm{range}\,}\) \( \newcommand{\RealPart}{\mathrm{Re}}\) \( \newcommand{\ImaginaryPart}{\mathrm{Im}}\) \( \newcommand{\Argument}{\mathrm{Arg}}\) \( \newcommand{\norm}[1]{\| #1 \|}\) \( \newcommand{\inner}[2]{\langle #1, #2 \rangle}\) \( \newcommand{\Span}{\mathrm{span}}\) \(\newcommand{\id}{\mathrm{id}}\) \( \newcommand{\Span}{\mathrm{span}}\) \( \newcommand{\kernel}{\mathrm{null}\,}\) \( \newcommand{\range}{\mathrm{range}\,}\) \( \newcommand{\RealPart}{\mathrm{Re}}\) \( \newcommand{\ImaginaryPart}{\mathrm{Im}}\) \( \newcommand{\Argument}{\mathrm{Arg}}\) \( \newcommand{\norm}[1]{\| #1 \|}\) \( \newcommand{\inner}[2]{\langle #1, #2 \rangle}\) \( \newcommand{\Span}{\mathrm{span}}\)\(\newcommand{\AA}{\unicode[.8,0]{x212B}}\)

I am a poet, spoken word artist and a curator. Some of my poems have been published in the poetry anthology “Inside the Beyonds” where I am the opening poet. Apart from journalism and poetry, I am also an amateur phone photographer who plays between landscape photographs and portraits." He makes it clear, stanza by stanza, through the first part of the poem, that there was truly no difference between two diverging paths in a wood, yet he did take one of them, leaving the other forever unexplored. He imagines finally that in the far future of old age (he was 42 years old when the poem was published) he will be telling this story of how to the extent to which what I wrote on this subject in 1925 isIodated'. Richards's Principles of Literary Criticism was published I write for that bullied little girl in the playground who didn’t see herself reflected. Literature’s a tapestry which has been a white cotton cloth bleached of other narratives. I’m writing to be a part of that tapestry. I’m a spoken word poet and a voice over artist with over 13 accents. I started it all for fun for me but I saw the extent spoken word poetry could go, how much it people could connect to it, from issues on mental health to the state of Nigeria, life in general, people could connect with my videos, with my art, my soul."

Your voice carries your character. You might have a light, strained voice, or you might have a deep, rolling voice, but that is not your voice. It is the prop you were given, and you use it as any good actor would. There are some communications we make with the voice that only the voice can convey. The voice is not even the words you say. The voice is there in how you deal with the air coming up and out, the rhythms and resonances, the intonations, pauses and rushes it makes possible, and the way your muscles work in your body. when the dramatic monologue is not pu t into the mouth of somecharacter already known to the reader from history or from Here, readers can see Hemingway’s short sentences and direct approach to his subject matter. There is no way to misinterpret this example of his writing. His work is also known for the “iceberg theory,” a style of writing that relies on allusions and the reader’s ability to look in-between the lines for clues.

Read through what you have written. Underline arresting lines. On a new sheet, write out lines from your three voices, arranging them together as a poem. Think about what you want the reader to know, and when. What story are the voices telling? Which voice should have the first line and which one the last? In Susanna Kaysen’s memoir Girl, Interrupted we get to experience a story from a very unique perspective—that of the author, who is actually writing about her time as a patient in psychiatric hospital. The voice of the story is unique in that it reflects the author’s attitude about the events, but the author is also the real-life protagonist of the story. Here, Susanna recounts her appointment with a psychiatrist: If a poet writes ‘I’ in a poem, to whom are they referring? Sometimes, it might be clear that they are referring to themselves. Sometimes, they might be referring to a fictional or historical character that they have taken on the voice of. Or, the ‘I’ might not be a character exactly, but a voice that moves along the action or thought, often called a narrator or speaker. Finally, the audience, of course, are the intended readers the poet imagines when writing the poems and who they hope will read the poems. It helps me to think about voice in terms of its everyday meaning – that is, how someone speaks. We all have individual voices and we are extremely good at distinguishing between voices and identifying people from their speech. However, whilst we may only have one voice, we can manipulate our voices to express different tones and moods. We can speak assertively or romantically, persuasively or righteously, for example. great poetic dramatist is a world in which the creator is everywhere present, and everywhere hidden.

and as if neither of the first two voices was audible in good drama ;\ tic verse. And this indeed is the conclusion to which Herr Benn's ~ , According to poet Tony Hoagland, poetic voice is the "distinctive linguistic presentation of an individual speaker." - The Art of Voice: Poetic Principles and Practice, 2019. We sometimes fall into this notion that there isn’t a range of poetry to choose from in the UK, but there really is. More needs to be done in terms of diversifying the pool of editors, but also in extending the range and remit of the process of editorship. Every editor’s perspective on what is good is subjective, but a great editor looks beyond that: they take their time with work that’s unfamiliar and learn to appreciate it on its own terms. If existing editors do that, and if new editors are allowed to enter the fold, then I think British poetry publishing will be much better for it. Writing has been an escape for me and I won't deny that I discovered writing through my passion of reading. The creation of new thoughts is the pursuit of every human I believe. I have been able to continue my passion for writing until this date."

The poet is attempting to articulate what cannot be said; that imagistic language seems to hold painful emotions and find the essence of them. Yes, good, interesting and original contemporary poetry (or prose). Read and heard by people who care about the spoken word. That is the only “vibe”. Danez Smith is someone who continues to blow my mind, and there’s always something new to see in their work. Also: Patricia Smith, Caroline Bird, Lisel Mueller, Tony Hoagland. One of the kookiest voices in literature comes from Dr. Seuss, known for his unruly rhyme patterns, made up words and overall silly voice. In his beloved classic The Cat in the Hat, Doctor Seuss tells his story with three voices—the children, the fish, and the Cat in the Hat. Here are two stanzas, one showing the fish’s voice, one showing the Cat’s: Broaddus uses the first person plural (our, we, us) to help the reader imagine being part of his childhood friend group. “Soaked” allows readers to imagine joining the boys on the baseball field in the dewy morning, evoking a sense of nostalgia.
