About this deal

As you are learning the new skill of handling, you will be surprised at how easy it all becomes after a relatively short period of time. A thin ring around the inside of the egg indicates an early death. The embryo died at the start of incubation, usually within a couple of hours. These eggs are easy to identify and remove, and I have included a photo below.

Now carefully pour the wax into the funnel until it spills over and remove the funnel. Make sure the wax is not too hot. I will also explain some of the mysteries behind candling and help you get proficient at this skill, which is extremely useful for incubating and hatching. As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, you can make your own candler using an LED flashlight and a piece of cardboard. If it does spill, your wax is either too hot or the tape wasn't positioned correctly. Wait until the wax left inside the mold hardens and covers the hole that way. Then carefully pour in the rest of the wax.

There are four distinct periods of incubation when embryos can die, and I provide common reasons for these losses in my incubation troubleshooting guide. There are some definite high points along the journey to hatching. If your candle regularly, you will become very proficient at seeing these stages and judging how the egg is progressing. The secret to your success will be keeping good notes on every egg. You should note the temperature and humidity of the incubator, day #, air cell size in your notebook. Some folks note the ambient temperature and humidity too. It is not a fail-safe way to tell what’s happening inside the egg, but using your finely tuned observational skills, you can get a pretty good idea of progress or problems. Exactly how much you can see is limited in most cases. For example, it is doubtful that you will see anything happening inside the egg before Day #4.

Limitations Of Egg Candling

Perhaps one of the most important pieces of information is the size of the air cell. We have talked about this briefly in other articles, so that we will expand a little here. Candling will not tell you if the egg is fertilized until Day 4 or so, when the veins start to develop. Marking The Eggs

This ultra bright, LED Torch. I found normal LED torches with batteries go dim as the batteries age, this one is rechargeable and you can top it up from time to time to keep it super bright. Shipped eggs can be prone to many problems, and the hatch rate of shipped eggs is around 75% on average. If you'd like your candle to be able to stand on it's own, turn on your stove, place a piece of aluminum foil on it and melt the bottom.

Egg Candling ‘Milestones’

Wax shrinks when it hardens, so just as with the first candle, you'll need to keep filling the hole in the bottom until there is not longer a hole left when the candle has hardened completely. These embryos die further along in the incubation process and using your newly acquired detective skills. You will be able to eliminate some causes of death. At hatch No, really, you don’t, but if you can, it takes some of the guesswork out of hatching and can help you to improve the chances of subsequent hatches. Using a regular pencil – no marker pens, the toxins can leach through the shell– you can mark the eggs as you desire. I usually number them 1 -12 etc. You can mark on the shell the size of the air cell, which breeds, color.

If you have had problems with bad hatches in the past, candling can sometimes help to see what goes wrong and give you some ideas to try to fix the problem for subsequent hatches as well. Roll a funnel out of paper and place into the top hole of the egg. Make the hole bigger if you have to.To be honest, a small ultra-bright torch is all you need, you can use your hand between the egg and torch to make a good seal. Candling an egg allows you to see in a limited way what’s going on inside an egg at particular points along the way to full development. We hope you enjoyed learning about candling, and perhaps you learned something too! Let us know in the comments section below… Most candlers today use light-emitting diodes (LED’s) rather than electric bulbs. The advantage of LED is that it produces a bright white light without much heat. After a week of incubation, place your egg onto your egg candler in a darkened room and turn on the light. You should be able to see shadows from inside the egg. With practice, you will identify fertile eggs by the dark dot, the embryo and the spider-like blood veins spreading out around the egg.
