About this deal

Leaf miners are the larval stage of various types of flies, moths, sawflies, and some beetles. The minuscule larvae measure 0.04” to 0.07” (1 – 2 mm) in length. The tiny maggots tunnel in leaves, feeding on the soft tissue. You can see leaf miner damage by the shape of yellowish winding scars on leaf surfaces. The color change is from the chlorophyll containing cells inside the leaf being eaten. When you eat the peanut butter out of the jar, you are removing the good stuff inside, and leaving the outside—the jar. This is what leaf miners are doing. Many larvae feeding together may cause blotches. For example, Spinosad solutions are added to a spray bottle that attaches to your garden hose. You then spray plants with the natural solution every four to seven days until you no longer have problems with leaf miners.

Once mature, female leaf miners mater and the use their needle-style reproductive organ to lay roughly 250 eggs beneath the surface of the leaves. Martin, A.D.; Stanley-Horn, D.; Hallett, R.H. While the adults vary widely in size and form, the larval stages do the mining, and they all look similar to the unaidedeye. Watch the first true leaves in spring. These are a likely target for the initial leaf miner generation that overwintered in the soil. Promptly remove any suspected damage and be ready to take other actions below.

So your prevention methods failed, or you never had the chance to stop leaf miners from invading. Now you have leaf miners making a meal out of the foliage in your garden. It’s common to notice that you have ground bees in the early spring when they become active, and you’re doing yard work. You spot them hovering about close to the ground, and if you observe, you can see them entering the underground burrows. Adult females lay about a total of ~ 250 eggs during their lifetime. Eggs are small cylindrical, creamy white to yellow and ~0.35 mm long. Tuta absoluta will deposit its eggs on the underside of leaves or stems. Hatching takes place after 4-6 days. Leaf miner larvae spends the winter buried in the dirt beneath their host plants. In the spring, when the temperature starts to warm up, the larvae start to process from their pupil stage into a juvenile or young adult state by the final days of April. Healthy plants are the least damaged by these little chewing pests, so ensure your plants are well taken care of. Regularly fertilize your plants, keep them pruned well, and provide compost or other good soil for them to grow in. Plant health is paramount!
