About this deal

For its clean burning and general convenience gas takes some beating as a fuel source for camping stoves. However it is not without disadvantages. In colder weather its performance can be sluggish at best, and if you're out in a UK winter or high up on an Alp this can be quite an issue. The cause is simple physics. Liquefied gas needs to evaporate before it's burned, but in the cold it is less able to do so. When the temperature outside decreases the pressure inside a gas canister also drops, and as the contents are used up this low pressure becomes progressively more of an issue. While we traditionally have sourced our gas from South Korea, we have moved the production for SIP Power Gas to Greece to be closer to our main customer base. From there, the gas is now being transported to Northern Germany and then to Sweden – a significant shortening of the delivery routes. The reason that production was not moved directly to Northern Europe is that there is currently no infrastructure in Sweden or Germany to fill biogas into camping gas containers in these countries. We have joined the Science Based Targets Initiative which sets independent targets for us to achieve to do our bit to limit global warming to 1.5°C. Our targets are to halve our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2025 based on 2018 base year and reduce our total carbon intesnity by 15% every year to achieve genuine net zero by 2050.

SIP Power Gas is also EKOenergy-labelled. EKOenergy is a global, non-profit and independent mark of quality, supported by environmental NGOs. To achieve this labelling a product must fulfil strict sustainability criteria. In turn, the label also finances renewable energy projects in developing countries. In this way, buying EKOenergy-labelled products allows consumers to contribute to the fight against energy poverty and climate change. Construction and Performance In general, the production and distribution of camping stove fuel involve complex supply chains that can span multiple countries and companies. What is Primus SIP Power Gas? And how does it work? To assess and evaluate environmental impacts connected to SIP Power Gas, we conducted a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) screening with aid from an independent third party. When developing a product with as little environmental impact as possible, all the steps in the supply chain need to be under evaluation. This means that every link in the process has been reviewed in detail to examine the environmental impact of each step. The ultimate goal is to deliver the strongest product possible, from a sustainability perspective. The brand has said that other steps on their sustainability journey will be to produce the most fuel-efficient stoves on the market, to carefully consider the choice of materials they use in future and aim to build stoves to be life-long companions (or in other words, achieve sustainability through longevity). In conjunction with offsetting the carbon emissions for all Primus fuel, it’s an ambitious and important programme that looks to a greener future. The figures show how positive the effects of this process can be: If such products are filled with biogas instead of fossil fuels, their CO2 emissions can decrease dramatically.

Different gases have different boiling points. The lower the boiling point, the higher the pressure in the container at a certain temperature, which leads to higher output on the stove. Propane has the lowest boiling point, followed by isobutane and then butane. At low temperatures, you want a mixture of gases that have a low boiling point as this results in better output on the stove. This is the reason behind the mixture of propane and isobutane in our Power Gas and Winter Gas. At higher outdoor temperatures, you want a mixture of gases with a higher boiling point instead, which is why we have butane instead of isobutane in our Summer Gas. Currently, no studies have measured the exact environmental impact of outdoor stove fuel. However, since oil and gas are considered non-renewable resources, their production and use have various ecological, social, and economic effects. Primus have stated that their ultimate goal is to phase out fossil fuels altogether in the world of outdoor cooking. As such, SIP Power Gas is a major step forward, and will be a cornerstone product in the future Primus product range. After all, it’s the only consumable product they make, but also a core product, since it powers many of their camping stoves and lanterns. The Swedish partner then adds the same amount of biogas (coming from a Swedish biogas refinery) to its overall production. Primus is paying for the extra costs. For most of our stoves you will use gas as fuel. Our containers hold a mixture of propane, butane and isobutane. The mixture between the different gases depends on whether it is Power Gas, Winter Gas or Summer Gas.

Welcome to our complete collection of outdoor gear! We offer a wide range of products to help you make the most of your adventures in the great outdoors. Our product line includes: All our factories sign up to our Code of Conduct. Find out where we make our product by visiting our Factories of Alpkit factory zone. The Swedish partner then sells the mix of biogas and fossil gas to customers who can technically fill that gas into their products.
