Even though I played with my new Rummikub 6 set a few times after it first arrived, I had to wait until the Christmas holidays to travel to my family home in Rochester, NY to play with a full 6 players. Finally, I can play with my wife, parents, and siblings all at once, and that was what allowed me to put the finishing touches on this review. The original Rummikub FREE version (not Rummy nor Rummy Cube or Okey) is one of the most popular family games in the world. This is an SVG file I designed in Inkscape to use as an alternative to the tiles in Rummikub. There are a few reasons for creating these:Rummikub (pronounced “cube”, not “cub”) was first released in the United States in 1977 and won the Spiel des Jahres in 1980. As the name suggests, the game is similar to Rummy. The game is comprised of 106 tiles, consisting of two jokers (which act as “wilds”) and 2 sets each of numbers 1 to 13 in 4 different colors. From every single angle, these are a big win. My only question: why did it take the world so long to come up with these? Tiles can be laid in sets (or “runs”) of at least 3 tiles. These runs can be consecutive numbers of the same colour or sets of the same number using the four different coloured “suits”. Rummikub. Both Bonn and I loved the physical game and then managed to find a phone app version which was a very close version of the real game, but somehow even more addictive. It’s hard to drag yourself away from it. Why is Rummikub so popular?
