About this deal

If you’re interested in vintage board games then why not head over to Facebook and join our new vintage board games group.

The idea is simple. Two players sit across from each other. One is the ninja student and the other the master. The student has to try to sneak past the ninja master to press the coin held in the ninja’s left hand. Each time they manage to do so they score a point. You see, as an incurably hopeless, wish-upon-a-star daydreamer, when my first baby boy came into my life, I swiftly realised that being the parent you thought you would be, and creating family memories to treasure in the way you imagined before your baby was born [and keeping you awake all night] is a real challenge. Strangely the pair of them became quite an iconic couple with the man in question reaching some level of fame as Mr Mastermind. My searches online for more about the history of the game came across a fabulous article about the pair of them being reunited years later and talking about how they had no idea quite how iconic they would become. Now, the bit we weren’t totally clear on is if you tell the code breaker which peg is the right colour in the right position. We did, but I’m finding rules online that suggest you should go either way. This was our first attempt so I was keeping things easy. Slap Ninja comes in a front open cardboard box attached at the with a couple plastic style ties, easily cut with sissors, a small plastic ties at the bottom. All these instructions seem a bit confusing on first read, but once you start playing it’s actually really easy to know what you’re doing.

The game centres around a complicated looking plastic board and lots of coloured plastic pegs – hence the reason I’m guessing a plastics company got involved originally. The kids had great fun playing Slap Ninja. The only real problem we had is that no matter who was the student they just kept winning. I’m not sure if that’s because I’ve managed to breed kids with natural ninja like skills, or just because they found the trigger squeezing hard work, but either way I was proud of my little ninjas! Once you have enough pegs to take a square you remove your opponent’s pegs from that square and fill it all in with your own pegs. Once this is done that square can not be touched again, even if your opponent rolls a 2. There’s no date on my copy of Superpuzzle, but I believe it to date from either the late 60s or early 70s. Certainly the days before people had phones or computers to entertain them on a wet Sunday afternoon. As an exhausted mom to 3 beautiful boys aged 5-11, Keep Up With the Jones Family began as a family blog and turned into my passion.

Superpuzzle is something that you an either play on your own, or against another player. The game contains two sets of twenty four pieces (one set red and one green) with each set having 12 each of two different shapes – a rectangle, and what could be described as a rectangle with a corner cut off! The suspense element of the Slap Ninja game adds a competitive edge, which Fin particularly enjoys, especially against his dad and his sister. The rules of Slap Ninja are quite straight-forward, and it’s aimed at 4yrs+ which I would agree with.Slap Ninja is a new fast and skilful game that will appeal to both children and adults alike. Essentially the game is for two players and is centred around a huge chop hand operated by one player and the other player trying to grab treasure before the hand slaps him.

I can also see the pair of them taking time to master their ninja skills so that they can take on new ninja students and try to defeat them. The aim of the game is for the student to grab the Ninja’s without being slapped by the Ninja’s huge chopping hand.

Marking the code breaking attempts

With the strapline “A second to learn… a lifetime to master” I can happily confirm that Slap Ninja is an incredibly easy game to learn to play. Mastering it however is a totally different story. For Millie and Toby this type of one-on-one challenge is a game they love. Of course, there was lots of arguing and maybe a little bit shouting and pouting but all in all they did have a lot of fun. I did not have so much fun as Tracey, who beat me three to nothing. I shall have my revenge when we next have a games evening!
