About this deal

From the second we heard host Alan Cumming's mischievous voiceover, we were hooked on The Traitors. Maybe it was the mystique of its Scottish castle setting, the charms of its alluring host, or the intense vibes around the banishing table. Probably, it's that we love mess, and there's no better mess than that intentionally caused by a traitor dead set on sabotage and subterfuge. Nemesis is the original Alien movie in everything but an official license. But that does not make it any less thematic or frightening. The plot is similar. Your space vessel is infested with alien creatures and it’s your job as a crew to work together. You sneak around the ship, frantically repairing its systems, find a solution in the lab, or combat the alien intruders yourself. At the heart of space-themed intrigue, Battlestar Galactica stands tall. This social deduction game throws players into the midst of a cosmic crisis, with a brilliant traitor mechanic lurking beneath the surface. Navigate hidden roles and reveal traitors while striving to fulfil the main goal — survival. Secret Hitler

The Resistance: Avalon pits the forces of good and evil in a battle to control the future of civilization. Up to 10 players can get involved trying to deduce secret identities and ‘out’ the evil ‘Minions of Mordor’ in this fantasy deception game. Deception – Murder in Hong Kong You are head of a family in an Italian city-state, a city run by a weak and corrupt court. You need to manipulate, bluff and bribe your way to power. Your object is to destroy the influence of all the other families, forcing them into exile. Only one family will survive. Lords of Waterdeep makes the list of the best hidden role board games because it is a worker placement game where you do not have all the information needed at hand. This game carries the Dungeons & Dragons brand which speaks volumes to its theme and intensity level.

If you’ve been watching The Traitors and thinking you’d love to play a similar sort of deception game at home with your friends or family, here are our recommendations for the best traitor board games. The Best Traitor Board games We can’t wait to recreate the TV series sensation at home”, says senior marketing and licensing director Emma Weber. “Identity Games is the mastermind team behind the brand The Escape Rooms: we thoroughly enjoy working with the team who continue to drive creativity and quality in everything they do.” Unearth the legacy of betrayal in this modular board game that evolves with each playthrough. As the scenario cards unveil new challenges, the traitor mechanic becomes a key element, turning allies into enemies in the blink of an eye. Navigate a haunted house, gather friends, and prepare for an unforgettable gaming experience.

But in your hunt to find a great traitor game, I’m here to help. I’ve spent time digging through the piles of games that will let you embrace your inner turncoat and there are, in fact, quite a few gems out there. So without further ado, here are our top 5 board games with a traitor (with a couple of honorable mentions): Honorable Mention: Police Precinct Cooperative board games are one of my favorite genres to play. I enjoy a sense of teamwork and group celebration on a hard earned victory. But sometimes, I just want to be sneaky. While it’s fun to be the bad guy, it’s even more fun for your fellow players to be unaware of your deception. Enter the traitor role. The traitor mechanic hasn’t been as fully embraced as the cooperative game mechanic in board gaming. I’m not sure why, but there are nowhere near as many games with a traitor as there are with fully cooperative mechanics. Betrayal is a ton of fun to play. The best part is no one can know who the traitor will be until it happens. That nice little girl you just gave an item to might turn around and use it to stab you in a few turns. The random party member that turns on the rest is an interesting dynamic that adds a lot of tension to the second half of the game. There have been games when the player with the most health and items suddenly turned on the party, much to the chagrin of the rest of the players. With some great components and a play time in under an hour, Betrayal is a great choice for gamers and non-gamers alike. Note: Be sure to get the green box 2nd edition of this game. The first edition had a LOT of typos in the rule book and scenario books. The horror genre of the Avalon Hill board games make them the perfect Halloween board game. Avalon Hill Betrayal at Baldur’s Gate Bang! The Dice Game makes the list of the best hidden role board games because you never really know if a player is on the side of the law or an outlaw. This is a fun and fantastic franchise and the surprise makes it all the better. Bang! uses this idea so well that both the games (which are separate) make this list. A sign of true confidence.

Delve into the political drama of Secret Hitler, a game that combines the paranoia of hidden roles with the intensity of a prize pot waiting to be claimed. As fellow players work together, the traitor mechanic adds a twist to the game’s objective, making every decision critical and every alliance suspect. Avalon Hill Betrayal Legacy In the quiet village of Ravenswood Bluff, ‌a Demon is on the loose, murdering by night and disguised in human form The aim of the faithfuls is to work out who is betraying them and ‘banish’ a suspect at the roundtable each evening. Spoiler ahead: it’s safe to say they aren’t very good at finding traitors. Naturally, the combined lure of money and the paranoia of traitors lurking among them leads to drama, crying, arguing and some unlikely touching moments between contestants (72-year-old Andrea is a fan favourite).

In Ultimate Werewolf, each player gets a unique role: A Werewolf, Seer, Troublemaker, or another, all with special abilities. After a secret night phase that includes changing roles, players have just 5 minutes to find a Werewolf. Cheese Thief If you both choose to reveal a Faithful card, you’ll split the collected gold coins from the pot thus far. If only you choose betrayal, you get everything. If you both choose Betrayal, everything in the shared hoard is lost! Then a new round begins with all players resurrected. Whoever has the most gold coins at the end of the final round is the winner! Final ThoughtsEvery time an event card is drawn, there could be a murder or banishment. You need to make sure you’re not the victim of either. Whenever a murder comes up, someone will die, so the Faithful need to work together to find out who is working against them. Embark on a horror-based adventure in the city of Baldur’s Gate, where betrayal and hidden roles take centre stage. This traitor’s board game features 50 scenarios for endless replayability. The Traitor’s Board Game In Shadows Over Camelot, players must work together to defeat the evil that is encroaching on the land. Each players is assigned one of the Knights of the Round Table, each with their own special ability. On a players turn, they must advance evil and then go questing. Questing will involve drawing cards, moving to locations and playing cards to attempt to finish a quest. Shadows over Camelot has a lot of moving parts, but is still very easy to learn and play. It actually is a fairly tough game to beat too, the approaching evil is no push over. Players will often feel up against a wall and must work together to defeat the evil. It’s rare in a game of Shadows Over Camelot where we don’t’ feel like we are just barely treading water. Social deduction is the name of the game here. Players have to use their gut, deduction and instinct to try and ferret out the traitors. This make the Resistance a great social game. It can accommodate up to 10 players is is incredible easy to play. A great choice if your group is looking for a more social game than traditional. I should note that The Resistance is clearly inspired by the very old game Werewolf, and is better game in my opinion (which is also why werewolf isn’t on this list). Nemesis takes the top spot on the list of the best hidden role board games because it is an epic experience with the threat of secret hostile creatures at every turn. It keeps you constantly on the edge of your seat and cautiously moving forward. There is so much to this game but having hidden roles at the core is a big positive.
