About this deal

The book goes through the alphabet and showcases words for each letter, so not only does it integrate the progressive themes, it also helps to teach the alphabet. NCAC is joined by over 400 signatories, including nearly 80 organizations, over 50 bookstores and 17 publishers and over 250 individual stakeholders, comprising authors, teachers and librarians. Memorable, often humorous poems that teach the alphabet through activist political examples. Never too early to expose your children to justice." — Viet Thanh Nguyen in Vulture.com Policies already exist in most districts to allow individual concerned parents to influence what their own children read. This year, time and again, we have seen those policies ignored and repeatedly violated as books are removed without proper review based on the personal opinions of particular groups of people. We have also seen increasing reports of threats to the livelihood and safety of librarians, teachers, school administrators and school board officials who do not accede to the demands of these would-be censors. No individual or group has the right to impose their beliefs on others. School officials, as government actors, have a First Amendment responsibility to ensure that no particular viewpoint or belief is allowed to dictate what all students can learn and read. en het maakt me niet uit dat June nog maar 5 weken oud is en hier inhoudelijk de facto niets van kan hebben meegekregen) The alliteration and rhymes have the rhythm and fun of standard ABC books, burrowing into little ears and prompting memorization and spontaneous recitation." — YES! MagazineA is for Activism, written and illustrated by Innosanto Nagara, was an amazing find! The art in the book is beautifully unique and it manages to keep my toddler's attention - which is quite a rarity these days. It's wonderful when I stumble across something engaging and educational. The questions of representation that have upended Hollywood, television and politics in recent years are now hitting the world of children’s literature hard. Already this year, several young adult (YA) books have been pulled over representation concerns, following high-profile dustups. The rule of thumb for conservation educators and teachers is that up to grade 4, we teach children the GOOD only. The wise mentors teach to love all critters, the earth, and treat all living beings (including humans) with respect. In this vulnerable age, we do not brainwash them with terminology they do not understand or tell them what is the right opinion to have on an issue (whether it's an opinion we support or disagree with). We raise them to be their purest, kindest, and most wise selves. Children will naturally be empathetic, compassionate, respectful, and kind hearted with proper mentorship and without the need of ideological suggestions at such a young age.

This is a board book, so presumably geared toward babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, and their adults. The illustrations are colorful and interesting and while I’m not a huge fan of their style, I think many readers will like them, including young readers/listeners. However, the vocabulary is so advanced that while babies to preschoolers might enjoy the pictures and the cadence of the language, they’re not going to understand much of the text. Older kids will but they don’t need board books. Books are windows and mirrors,” said early childhood education advocate Sara Rizik-Baer, paraphrasing the critic and scholar Rudine Sims Bishop. “They’re mirrors allowing children to see themselves represented, as well as windows into other people’s lives.” Meanwhile Elizabeth Acevedo, who swept young adult fiction awards in 2018 with her book, The Poet X, said recently at a lunch in Washington DC, that as an Afro-Dominican author she has no interest in upholding the supposed “nobility” of the classics. “I don’t write for that canon,” she said. Powerful and simple rhyming board book that highlights big topics. It starts the ball rolling for conversations parents and caregivers can have with their child about people's rights.Such numbers are particularly problematic in the realm of children’s books, where artistic expression lives alongside educational imperative. The importance of that is something she saw firsthand as a bilingual school teacher in East Oakland when her second-grade student, a Mexican American girl, drew a puzzling picture of herself and Rizik-Baer standing under a rainbow. A is for Activist speaks to the possibilities of change, of proactive parenting, of creating community, and of celebrating our collective histories. A is for Activist: why children’s books are getting political A is for Activist: why children’s books are getting political

A is for Activist is an ABC board book written and illustrated for the next generation of progressives: families who want their kids to grow up in a space that is unapologetic about activism, environmental justice, civil rights, LGBTQ rights, and everything else that activists believe in and fight for. Our Spanish-language imprint represents a major ongoing effort to introduce important English-language texts to new readers.

Trained to follow a leftist curricular agenda, a majority of K-12 teachers are set on molding the social justice warriors, anti-free market revolutionaries, radical environmentalists, global warmists, and feminist Furies of the future. The exclusion of the traditional focus on writing skills, effective reading, civics, maths and sciences, and the counter-emphasis on "social justice" themes in the public schools constitutes the first stage of the systematic dumbing down – what historian Niall Ferguson calls The Great Degeneration– that afflicts our society. Publishers are on the hunt for diverse books, even as rightwing critics decry the supposed sullying of children’s literatures with politically correct dogma. Although the book is meant for ages 0-3, Rethinking Schools has suggested that it can even be used with older kids: “It could also be used as a prompt for older students to create their own alphabet books with a conscience.” This unique alphabet book encourages young readers to stand up for what they believe in, engage with their community, and become aware of the social movements going on around them, at any age. Innosanto Nagara is being awarded the “Upstander New Talent Award” for A is for Activist from the 2013 Horace Mann Upstanders Book Awards Rona Renner(RN, Parent Educator, Host Childhood Matters RadioShow): Innosanto Nagara’s book “A is for Activist” is beautiful, inspiring, and offers an opportunity for parents to explore their values with their children. At this time in history we need books for children that use words like, justice, ally, freedom, and advocate. Our children are the activists who will help to heal the world.
