About this deal

Once paired, this indoor gradient simulator adds physical gradient changes of up to 20 percent on climbs and -10 percent on descents. The choice for Zwift or SYSTM or some other platform is a more difficult one and comes down very much to personal preferences. Clearly if all your mates regularly cycle on Zwift and you love the social side of digital cycling then Zwift is your best option. However, if you love to be entertained, informed and motivated while you cycle at home then SYSTM is a great choice as your training partner, made even better if you are already heavily vested in the Wahoo ecosystem. I group ride on gravel with some expert/pro level guys that I can hang with and take my share of pulls. I cannot come even close to riding with them on Zwift since I switched trainers – (they are on multiple trainers but some on Core same as me) I’m not entirely sure what the exact issue is here. You might think that it was the relatively light flywheel struggling with the steeper gradients, but the 7% inclines I first noticed the issue on were easily handled by the Elite Zumo – which has a lighter flywheel and a lower maximum gradient.

GPLlama has a quite nice test that covers extended periods at 200w and 250w followed by some short under/over sprints. It covers sensible power ranges that most of us will encounter in normal riding. What is a turbo trainer? In simple terms, you mount the rear of your bike to a static unit – sometimes by the wheel itself, so the tyre sits on a roller, or by removing the wheel, so your chain runs on a cassette attached to the turbo. The result is an indoor exercise bike that rides like a real bike (sort of). The most basic turbo trainers, these use magnetic resistance to imitate the feel of the road, and are generally the cheapest due to their simplicity. There are, however, few smart versions available. Usually supplied with a manual resistance changer, their smart capabilities aren't as varied as others and can't be programmed to replicate a certain gradient or power resistance. These apps can also guide you through power-based interval workouts, with the resistance automatically adjusting to keep you in the required training zones (this is known as ERG mode). In my case, I was looking to see how it reacted in two core apps: Zwift and TrainerRoad. The actual apps don’t typically much matter, but rather the use cases are different. In Zwift you get variability by having the road incline change and by being able to instantly sprint. This reaction time and accuracy are both tested here. Whereas in TrainerRoad I’m looking at its ability to hold a specific wattage very precisely, and to then change wattages instantly in a repeatable way. There’s no better test of that than 30×30 repeats (30-seconds at a high resistance, followed by 30-seconds at an easy resistance). The Elite Zumo is one of the cheapest direct-drive smart trainers available. Simon von Bromley / Immediate Media So far the CORE has been extremely good, I had been training for 9 months, around 5 times per week. Its silent, works good and cheaper, and with the money I saved, I went for the Wahoo Smart Fan.

A turbo trainer is not only a great way to keep your fitness levels up in the colder and darker months, but it's also a very effective way to train when you've got limited time. Obviously, it also means you're entirely safe from traffic, bad weather, potholes and pedestrians. Indeed, many riders now use turbo trainers all year round because they are such practical training tools. Ride quality is very good, especially considering it doesn’t have the largest flywheel out there, and we were impressed by its stability when really cranking things up. Similarly, for challenges such as a ‘virtual’ everesting, the rules stipulate that the realism must be set to 100%. If you’re planning on using the Alpe du Zwift for your attempt, then you’re going to fall foul of ‘the rules’, as the maximum gradient there is 14%. Although not the heaviest, the Saris H3 is the most solid direct drive turbo I’ve come across for sprints. That’s not to say it stays perfectly in place – not even the Tacx Neo Bike Smart does – but it represents a significant step up from other trainers. Like the Elite Direto XR-T, the resistance curve when sprinting also has a good feel to it, not requiring an excessive number of shifts as you wind up the watts. The Neo 2T is Tacx’s top-of-the-range smart trainer, and it’s priced accordingly. It looks like a spaceship and its spec and performance are among the best out there. If the chain is worn down, that means that the whole transmission on your bike is worn down (cassete and chain-ring). When you move the bike to the trainer, the new cassete is not fitting in the chain due to the chain-links being extended from use. It could also be that it needs some rear-derailleur adjustment. But I would bet on the chain being old. However, with the best smart trainers and third-party interactive apps, realising the benefits of indoor cycling has never been easier or, crucially, more fun. Read our top 5 indoor training tips for more inspiration. It might be a budget option but the Vortex Smart is still capable of automatically controlling resistance, so as the gradient steepens in Zwift or you hit the next interval in the Tacx app, the trainer will ramp up the effort required to keep the pedals turning. That said, there’s a much tighter limit as to what the 1.6kg flywheel (with an effective resistance of 11.8kg) can handle, with a maximum power output of 950 watts and a maximum incline of seven per cent. I was looking at buying this, but I’m worried by all the comments on the net (Yeah I know lol), about ESD issues still existing.

It was good to see that power outputs are similar to those found on my Garmin Vector power pedals, and was usually within a couple of percent at the most, so I had no issue with power read outs. Wahoo SYSTM takes a comprehensive, science-based approach to training, with a diverse workout library that includes immersive cycling, running and swimming sessions, yoga, bodyweight-based strength training and mental training.Indoor trainers used to be notoriously noisy, but there have been vast improvements made over the past few years. Wheel-on trainers are still typically louder than direct-drive trainers, but the gap has narrowed somewhat. As you can see, these are pretty darn close – at least to the Stages LR (which is the dual-sided Stages that’s been proven pretty reliable compared to many other power meters I’ve tested). The SRM EXAKT seems oddly a bit low (usually if/when I see it err, it goes high).
