It is every concern of mine!” Remy shouted. “Your brother was responsible for a girl’s murder! For no reason other than his own entertainment!” The man who had bested him was a Summer Lord. A Third Court vampire. His father was going to kill him. There are many things we suffer through that we never deserve, and that is true whether you are dead or living. I will offer what compensation I can to her family, to the best of my ability. Seven deaths to pay for one woman’s is a generous offer. I suggest you take it.”

Something that particularly hit different for me while reading Silver Under Nightfall is Remy’s dedication to keeping the people of Aluria safe. Just like Remy’s own relationship with his father, this is a connection that is fraught with tension and complication. Despite the fact that Remy deeply cares for his country and countrymen, they are wary of and vilify him for the rumors of being half-vampire. The younger vampire, Naji, at least had the wisdom to remain where he was throughout the fight, though the faint smirk on his face faded when his elder brother shot a dark glance his way. Gently, he placed her head against the crook of her arm and breathed a small prayer over the body, as he’d always done and was expected to do, though the words brought him little comfort and even less peace.Where I started with this review was that I still wasn’t sure whether the book was horror or fantasy. It was presented to me as horror and the scientific experimentation with zombie-like monsters who roam the countryside and infect others definitely has that vibe. There’s even a Doctor Frankenstein who is entirely too proud of his work even if he doesn’t use electricity to achieve his goals. Was she your lover? Is that why her death causes you such anguish?” The fresh intensity in the lord’s eyes had only increased, and it made Remy feel . . . uncomfortable. Vulnerable. More likely it was a sliver of a scent of a memory, he surmised, of what the vampire lord had been like when he’d still been human. He let go, and in the blink of an eye vanished, reappearing on the other side of the forest and calmly straightening his collar. Only then did Remy notice the curved sword at his hip, at the sheer arrogantce of the man not having used it at all. He would’ve liked nothing more than to forget every ball he’d ever been forced to attend, but the mind is a funny bastard, one he’d trained to retain information on the off chance it could save his life. And so he remembered. He remembered her.

As you all probably know by now, Rin Chupeco is one of my absolute all-time favorite authors. The Bone Witch trilogy was practically formative reading for me. Not to mention, The Never-Tilting World and The Ever-Cruel Kingdom both honestly spoke to me on a deep, almost spiritual level. So of course I had to read Rin Chupeco’s first venture into the adult genre, Silver Under Nightfall. After all, this isn’t just an ordinary adult debut. It’s an adult debut about vampires. Featuring a throuple, which Rin has described as “two vampires find a vampire hunter in the trash and take them in”. That’s where the zombies come in. Well, not really and not exactly zombies. But sorta/kinda and close enough. A companion novel, The Suffering, continues the story of Okiku and Tark as they travel the country. [11] He has a chance at having the kind of happiness that he never expected to even get a glimpse of. And he’s so, so certain that someone will take it away from him – unless he does it to himself first. The law? Whose laws, Reaper? Your human laws, which seek to kill my kind with extreme prejudice? What would your version of human punishment be? To have my brother while away his life in your gaols? Stake him? You will gain nothing but our ire, and your lords now do everything to prevent that. What is one woman worth, after all?”Chupeco was born and raised in Manila, Philippines. [2] They are of Chinese, Malay, Thai, and Filipino descent. [3] While the blurbs reference the anime series (and videogame) Castlevania, I think that’s because of the vampires, the politics and the monsters. I haven’t played or watched that so it’s not where my mind went. Instead, I kept seeing Remy as a younger, less confident Geralt of Rivia, in a world where hunting magical creatures gone rogue is needed while the people who do it are reviled. I would call it a bit of a coming-of-age story for The Witcher but I’m not sure Remy is fully adulting even by the end of the story – although he’s finally getting there. As I mentioned, Silver Under Nightfall is, at the heart of it, somewhat of a detective story. But even amongst a plot that keeps you guessing and a memorable cast of characters, Remy Pendergast really does stand out. Xiaodan is a beautiful charmer and Zidan is a magnetic enigma. But in my opinion, Remy is the star of the show. And that’s because he’s the most relatable character out of the trio. And then there’s the vampires, both the rogue vampires and the sexy vampire nobility. Which pushes the whole thing towards the paranormal which is an offshoot of horror. And he’s tempted. Even though becoming a vampire’s familiar is against the law. Even though he’s fought vampires all his life. Even though a vampire killed his mother and he was born from her corpse.
