About this deal

brian s - Vyvyan shouting "To the station!" followed by Motorhead launching into "Ace Of Spades" simply never gets old. Starring Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmondson, Nigel Planer, Christopher Ryan and Alexei Sayle, the sitcom was amongst the first and most iconic comedies to emerge from the "alternative comedy" scene to make it to television. Mayer Mainly me and Rik chose the bands. The Damned and Motörhead were really sweet. The naughtiest person we had on – and you probably wouldn’t even notice it was her – was Andi Oliver, when she was in Rip Rig & Panic. The extras on this release are contained on a separate disc and are entertaining and informative. The first two options are excerpts from documentaries that reference The Young Ones phenomena. The first, entitled ôCreating the Young Onesö, runs for 15 minutes and is taken out of A History of Alternative Comedy (1999). It describes the chain of events, starting with the comedy group ôTwentieth Century Coyoteö started by Adrian Edmondson and Rik Mayall, that eventually lead to the sitcom. There are various interviews with the actors, the producer and the writers recalling the period. The next featurette is entitled ôThe Young Ones and the 80sö and is taken from Laughter in the House: The Story of the British Sitcom (1999). This piece also contains interviews of the cast, writers and producers and attempts to explain the sit-comÆs historical significance. This featurette also puts the musical acts into context with the pop music culture at the time. They're saying it's completely uncut. And the suggestion is also that the flash frames that were cut for original broadcast will be in the extras.

I wouldn’t advocate cutting Blazing Saddles for the same reasons, but I wouldn’t show it to my kids either. Other highlights of the show include appearances from folks like Emma Thompson (Much Ado About Nothing, Dead Again), Robbie Coltrane (Harry Potter and the SorcererÆs Stone) and Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous) who is apparently married to Adrian Edmondson. Each episode also highlights an Eighties band whose appearance is blended into the plot line as seamlessly as any other turn in the ever rambling stories.

Plot: What’s it about? Video: How does it look? Audio: How does it sound? Supplements: What are the extras? Plot: What’s it about? Both Episodes of ‘Boom Boom… Out Go The Lights’ Introduced By The Producer Who Put Alternative Comedy On The TellyIn addition, almost every episode includes a musical performance by a guest artist and/or Alexei Sayle, with just one episode featuring a lion tamer instead. Some are better than others, naturally, but none are awful. They’re loosely shoehorned into the plot in some way, and were included so that the show could be classified as a variety series instead of a standard sitcom. This gave them a higher budget and allowed them to spend two days filming in the studio instead of one, so they could get a lot more done. There are various other bits and pieces online that aren’t mentioned above of course. I’m not going to list absolutely everything, but here are some of the more fun and interesting items out there. They’re all included on my playlist, along with some other relevant videos too. Living Doll Ryan Everyone involved was brilliant: witty, clever, energetic. I didn’t feel I really belonged. I wasn’t of their stable. Nothing against them because they were fantastic. But I never got hold of that character. People often say: “You must have had great fun; you must have really enjoyed it.” And I always say: “I wish I had.” It was brilliantly written. But I was never relaxed enough to enjoy it. Well, that's why I'd want two versions. One uncut, one with the more problematic material excised. But I mean, this isn't a thought-out proposal I'm making here. I just think some of the series uses language that you would never, ever get in a comedy programme in 2022. There’s nothing wrong with that per se, it’s a product of its time and in terms of the racist policeman skit, it’s done for a reason. I wouldn’t advocate cutting Blazing Saddles for the same reasons, but I wouldn’t show it to my kids either. That’s a bit of a shame, because I really loved the Young Ones when I was a kid. I don’t think it’s worth the risk that they would go off and use some of the unacceptable language in the playground.

Extensive photo gallery featuring the original music score and unpublished images from the production team This was not and never will be LucasFilms, but this is part of the mystique. The episodes were filmed in the early eighties and appear as such. The opening sequence has a strangely grainy texture in the digital format. The age of the film has brought about a slight paleness and iffy clarity but these characteristics merely reinforce one of the main philosophies of the show: No matter how progressed we think we are, there is still a ways to go. The Young Ones: Every Stoopid Episode is presented in same full-screen format as the original television show and appears much the same as my memory serves me. In any case, the video presentation is much better than the fuzzy VCR recordings I resorted to watching in college. Audio: How does it sound?Expressing his delight at continued interest in the series, co-writer Ben Elton said today: "Forty years melts away and I'm thinking of course of my dear lost friend Rik Mayall, forever young." There are a myriad of other characters that pop up for a start, played by an impressive roster of guest stars, many of whom were also from the comedy circuit as well as some other great actors, including:

This is surprising - even considering the source material, I'm still in to get what will hopefully be an upgrade and more transparent to the video source material than the DVDs are. I've got the first US release, will import this. Sayle It was Rik, Lise and Ben’s obsession that they were only going to do 12 episodes. I was sad that we didn’t do a bit more. It was popular, and that was a struggle for me. Because my own work was abrasive and challenging in some ways, I struggled with popularity. The Young Ones delivered me a kind of popularity by proxy which I appreciated. For me, aside from the comedy, is the show captured a particular formative phase of my life. I was 18 in 1982, hated Thatcher (still do!) and was also a student. The show kind of spoke to my generation and I'm sure my parents would've hated it if they'd watched it! Mayer Rik, Ben and I would meet and discuss the through-lines and so forth. And then we’d write two complete scripts: Ben would write a script and Rik and I would write one. And we’d push them together into one, then Alexei would have additional material, the stuff that he was doing. It would come out as an hour long or something. Then someone – usually me – would stay up all night editing it. We were determined to make them all really unpleasant. If you look at Fawlty Towers, none of them are really likable. The audience are predisposed to like main characters so you don’t actually have to make them sympathetic. We liked the idea that people would try and like these characters but every time they did, it would blow up in their face. Disclaimer - These episodes have been restored and remastered using the existing film where available, with any standard definition content upscaled during this process. The special features in this release are a mixture of standard and high definition. Due to the age of the original materials, the technical quality of the extras may vary in places. The Young Ones take on the toffs of Footlights College Oxbridge in Bambi. Photograph: BBC British Broadcasting Corporation The next two options are additional sit-com endeavors by members of the cast. Episode 1 of Filthy Rich & Catflap stars Rik Mayall as a celebrity named Richie Rich, Adrian Edmondson as his freeloading friend Eddie Catflap, and Nigel Planer as RichÆs perpetually intoxicated agent. It is refreshing to see the actors performing different roles, especially since RikÆs character has moved from completely depressing to mildly depressing. VyvyanÆs attitude is still noticeable in Adrian but the red hair dye is out along with the piercings. NigelÆs character is a far cry from Neil-the-hippy as he plays a lush with a fantastic comb-over hairstyle. The plot revolves around RikÆs character accidentally and repeatedly killing ôMilkyö (thatÆs the milkman, for those of you reading from the States). The third option is an on stage performance by Rik Mayall in which he reads a poem to the audience. It is from the Fundamental Frolics concert in 1981 and RikÆs on-stage personality and poem indicate that RikÆs character on The Young Ones was in the works well before they began filming the pilot episode.
