When Titans Clashed: How the Red Army Stopped Hitler - Goodreads

No other state in the Second World War paid as high a price for ultimate victory as did the Soviet Union. Tens of millions of civilians, and upwards of 20-29 million military personnel were lost in the battle for survival against Nazi Germany and her European allies. A full account of the Soviet army's triumph over the German army, from the Soviet perspective. Draws on formerly classified Soviet sources to place the war within its wider political, economic, and social contexts, and recounts the offensives and counteroffensives sweeping across a half-million square miles. Includes b&w photos and maps. For general readers interested in WWII and Soviet history. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com) Stalin, Zhukov, Vasilevsky and other members of the Stavka, or Supreme High Command, are probably the heroes of World War Two. Eisenhower, Patton, Montgomery and Bradley would have just been four generals in Russia, among scores of others who merited equal praise. When Titans Clashed provides an overview of the most titanic armed struggle in history, the murderous fight between the German Axis forces (large numbers of Italians, Romanians, Hungarians and Bulgarians were involved) and the Soviet armed forces. The numbers of men and arms employed and ground into mincemeat are simply staggering. Even if the Wehrmacht had available to it all of the men facing the Allies in France, it still would have lost the battle, as the Red Army had more than 6.5 million men in the fray in 1944 (3 times more than the Axis), according to Glantz, and the Soviet military production had long since outstripped that of the Axis. During the first phase the German's had the clear advantage and were able to inflict devastating losses but where unable due to logistical reasons destroy the entire Red Army. The Red army for it's part mad ton's of mistakes but where able to throw ton's of troops at the German's and were also able to move much of their industry east while maintaining decent production levels, which was a small miracle. The German's dispersed their effort in an attempt to pursue a bunch of loose goals. David Glantz is the foremost historian when it comes to the history of the Eastern Front of the Second World War. All I can give him and Jonathan House is nothing but praise for their work. A youtuber by the username of TIK (whose extensive World War Two videos inspired me to buy this book) said “We are living in the age of Glantz”, and that would be true. I have not read any other comprehensive books that cover the Eastern Front in depth like Glantz; I have yet to read any of Anthony Beevors or James Hollands’ work (I will in the future), but I am someone who likes the nitty gritty details when it comes to military history, and Glantz satisfies me in this regard. This man deserves a lot more credibility, respect, and wider awareness from the general public, the historical academia & from any historical documentaries that will be made in the future on the Second World War! What I learned from this book is so applicable to my knowledge of history, and now I feel I have a greater understanding of the eastern front than I did before. r/History is a place for discussions about history. Feel free to submit interesting articles, tell us about this cool book you just read, or start a discussion about who everyone's favorite figure of minor French nobility is! Until now the Soviet-German conflict of WWII has been told largely from the German point of view. This authoritative account, based on newly released Soviet studies, emphasizes the Russian version of events. It reveals, to a greater degree than previously known, how unprepared the Red Army was and how the leadership gradually gained in competence during the Moscow and Stalingrad campaigns. The authors describe how the Werhmacht eventually lost the ability to conduct a general offensive on a wide front while the Soviets learned to focus overwhelming force on a narrow front such as the Kursk salient, where the Red Army finally seized the initiative. The book conveys the colossal scope and scale of the five-year struggle and puts the military aspect in a wider perspective, showing, for example, how the Red Army's defense against the invasion gave the Communist leadership legitimacy. Glantz is an editor of the Journal of Slavic Military Studies; House teaches history at Gordon College in Georgia. Photos. (Nov.) This terrible war caused the USSR and it's people to constantly fear invasion and spend vast sums on it's defense which also included the satellite countries and spending on such countries as Vietnam and Cuba. Due to the economic fallout from the war and massive defense budget this led to the states eventual collapse.Art of War symposium, From the Don to the Dnepr: Soviet Offensive Operations – December 1942 – August 1943, A transcript of Proceedings, Center for Land Warfare, US Army War College, 26–30 March 1984
