Yale doesn’t quote the viewing angle of this camera, but I managed to get in most of my office with it sat against a wall. At least, I got the important bits. Covering a room, then, shouldn’t be too hard.The resolution indicates the size of image that is captured by the camera, the larger the image the clearer the image will appear. Higher resolution cameras are ideal when viewing footage on a large TV screen. Lower resolution cameras are perfect for viewing high definition video on your smartphone or tablet.

Having recently reviewed the Yale Indoor WiFi Pan and Tilt camera which had difficult to navigate menus, I was expecting this camera to be much the same given they share the same app. However, that’s not the case. The Yale Front Door WiFi Camera Light and Siren is actually much easier to control via your smartphone/tablet. While the main screen shows a ‘live view’ of your property, underneath there are clear buttons for additional ‘actions’. These include switching the siren or spotlight on, speaking to whoever is at your door, taking a picture, or recording footage. View Full Specification Once set up, you’ll need to insert a microSD card to record footage onto, and go through the menus to tailor the device for your setup. There’s an option to set the name of the room you are using the device in and make other adjustments such as setting which hours you want it to record the footage, whether you want it to link to an alarm or trigger the siren. It is easy to view recorded and real time images from your SmartPhone using the Yale View App* (available for iOS and Android) providing your cameras are connected to your internet router via Wi-Fi.

If you want to save video, you also need to install a microSD card, as you don’t get one in the box. Without a card, the camera will still work and you’ll get notifications but nothing will be saved. Once the video has been recorded, you can see clips on the timeline view: they appear as vertical red lines. Trying to select one with any accuracy is hard, so the regular library view is better. This shows you a list of clips, and you select which date you want to view using the controls at the top.Great camera and app much more stable now. Whole thing really customisable. Shame about the USB A plug on the end of the sealed cable which requires a big hole through the wall. Overall, this is a great piece of kit for the money. I particularly like the video replay based on movement detection. More useful is the activity zone setting. Using the simple grid, you can mark out the areas of the image that you want to monitor; motion outside of these zones is ignored. That was largely enough to keep down the number of notifications that I got.

Motion detection notification - Receive live notifications through the Yale View App as someone approaches your door From the app, you can tap your camera to go into the live view. From here you can see what’s going on in real-time, plus you can use the two-way talk feature to communicate with anyone that you can see. This view would be even better if the thumbnails worked, but I only ever got greyed out thumbnails with no picture. Is it any good? Well, not too bad actually. Provided there’s a clear view of a person, the camera will largely get the detection right. And, the footage is recorded when motion is detected, human or not. When setting up your Cameras, the image masking functionality allows users to simply select the areas that need to be covered by the motion detection feature, whilst ignoring any others that do not require camera coverage.
