So, how does this new drive actually perform? In our pre-benchmark drive-filling routine, the 990 Pro maintains peak performance for around 230GB of data transfer, which aligns with Samsung’s claims in terms of the amount of capacity available in high-speed SLC mode when the drive is empty. Needless to say, as you fill the drive, that figure will drop. It’s also a little lower than most competing 2TB M.2 drives, which tend to offer 300GB of SLC cache. Thereafter, there’s little if any sign of thermal throttling. Not that throttling was much of an issue on the 990 Pro. All components and firmware are produced in-house, including Samsung's world-renowned DRAM and NAND, for integrated start-to-finish quality you can trust. If you think about the current situation carefully, a revised Gen 4 drive does at least make sense. For starters, while you may now be able to buy PCIe Gen 5 capable PC platforms from both Intel and AMD, the number of such systems out there in the wild is still small. And, of course, neither of the big two M.2-compatible games consoles support PCIe 5.0. The new Bevelled type customisable frame design offers an elegant 45-degree angled inner edge frame. For starters, this means that gamers on older rigs would be able to experience some of the speed benefits of the new 990 Pro memory. The move to remain on the Gen 4 standard also likely means that Samsung is able to better control pricing and manage yields.

With the PCIe Gen 4-based 990 Pro, Samsung promised read and write speeds of 7,450 MBps and 6,900 MBps, respectively, and random performance of up to 1,550K IOPS, a 55% improvement over its predecessor. The latter helps reduce game loading times, with Samsung promising that the new solid-state drive is optimized for Microsoft DirectStorage API.
