I've never really experimented with whisky from Speyside, a region in North East Scotland around the River Spey known for its best-selling whiskies such as The Glenlivet and Glenfiddich. While you don’t encounter many Aberlour whiskies from independent bottlers, the distillery itself does release single cask bottlings every once in a while. They do this mostly in collaboration with a third party, in this case La Maison du Whisky, the French retail outlet and importer. It is as far away from smoky whiskies as you can get. In fact many of the Speyside options are described as fruity and sweet. Once a novelty when The Balvenie started finishing whisky, this is now a very common (almost traditional) procedure that doesn’t really stand out from the crowd. That said, Aberlour has a long history of double maturation so they know what they’re doing. Part of that ocore range is their 14 Year Old. This is one of the youngest malts that the distillery makes and is a really sumptuous offering. It has been matured in both Oloroso Sherry casks and first fill American Oak casks, giving it a wood forward flavour profile. Nose: Dark and rich sherry notes. Plenty of cocoa powder and dark chocolate, with hints of balsamic and aniseed. It has a damp earthiness to it, as well as hints of leather. Very intense, yet balanced, but not extremely complex.

Whisky is one of the most popular spirit drinks in the world and its sales and number of drinkers are increasing each year. This blog includes regularly updated tasting notes of all manner of whisky from the popular, inexpensive ones to the limited edition, rare bottlings. Aberlour is currently owned by Chivas Brothers, part of the larger Pernod Ricard group who took over the distillery in the 1970s. It has an annual production capacity of 3.8 million litres, although plans are submitted for a major upgrade and expansion. Aberlour sits comfortably within the Top 10 in terms of worldwide single malt sales and market share, being particularly popular in France and the USA.I’ve no idea for how long it matured in sherry casks, but judging by the aroma and the flavours, it was a considerable amount. I don’t think anyone tasting this blind, would guess this to be anything else than a big time sherry bomb. Aberlour 14 Years Old Double Cask (58,2%, OB for LMdW, 150 bts.) Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 20th Anniversary Edition Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 2019 The flavours are typical Speyside but with a summer twist. It's full of vanilla flavours but there is a definite hint of summer fruits. Light, sweet and smooth, the whisky is beautifully balanced. It's a refreshing whisky that's perfectly pitched for a summer dram. Wet for the mainland today, with hill sleet and snow, especially in the morning. Dry and bright for the Isles at first, but spells of heavy rain expected later in the afternoon. Windy on the Isles. Aberlour is a premium entry-level whisky. That basically means it is a perfect whisky for those to try the best that Speyside has to offer while still delivering the taste and flavours of a top quality single malt.

The whisky comes in a variety of ages 10, 12, 15, 16, 18 year old and rare 30-year-old 1970 vintage malt, as well as a cask strength releases. In 1975 Pernod Ricard acquired Campbell Distilleries, and joined with Chivas Brothers in 2001 and eventually opened a visitor centre. As a curious beginner or a seasoned whisky drinker, Aberlour has managed to create a fairly young whisky that is mature enough to do both. Get yourself a bottle this summer. Tomorrow, the mainland will become gradually cloudy, with a few showers at first, but becoming windy and wet later in the day. Turning largely dry with variable cloud in Shetland. Sunshine for Orkney. There is definitely nothing wrong with Aberlour 14 years Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky. I've been a whisky drinker for several years now but my tastes are pointed towards options from Islay.
