About this deal

Until this week’s release of Tillie Walden’s Clementine, it had never been an unquestionable masterpiece. Danzis, Alan (2012-12-07). "Interview with 'The Walking Dead' video game writer Gary Whitta". The New York Times. Archived from the original on 2013-06-24 . Retrieved 2012-11-17. I appreciated the discussions on Clem's prosthetics and Ricca's glasses. As always, Walden's art is gorgeous (even with the zombies). For the next two weeks, the trio and the cat travel to Olivia's mother's homebase to retrieve supplies and a plane. After arriving, they sneak in, however the cat starts making noises, which alerts one of the residents who Clementine swiftly punches out. Olivia slides a letter under the door of her mother's room and they all go to the hangar to retrieve the plane. They fly out just as several residents attempt to catch them. Watching out the window is Olivia and Georgia's mother, who is revealed to have died and turned. Clementine looks over the land and asks Olivia to fly over Vermont to show Amos the plane one last time. I’m certain longtime fans will have a lot to say about that — there are lists about the best episodes, the scariest issues; closer at hand (and more germane to this conversation) are the critical darling adventure games from now-defunct Telltale Games, from which the character of Clementine originates.

Now, I will say, there are many elements that are fun, and some moments that I would've liked to see in a setting like this. One of which being at the beginning with the Amish community (literally first-chapter stuff, so not too spoilery). Unfortunately though, we never do explore that community enough to get a sense as to how an Amish community functioned within an apocalypse. Like, what advantages did they have? What disadvantages? That's not really answered. Like the other cool concepts, it's thrown in there to be immediately brushed past for the next thing. Matulef, Jeffrey (2013-04-02). "Telltale nearly scrapped The Walking Dead's Clementine a week before recording". Eurogamer. Archived from the original on 2013-04-05 . Retrieved 2013-04-03. I think Clementine's decision to leave him behind at the school makes a lot of sense. Clementine didn't leave him behind because she didn't care for him anymore. She left behind because she is a deeply traumatised kid who doesn't know the difference between living and surviving. It is unfair to expect her to be his mother. The moment she knew AJ was safe in the community, she felt like her job looking after him was done. She returned to wandering the roads alone because fighting to survive is all she knows. In one scene, Clementine tells another survivor that when she isn't fighting to survive, she is so bored. In another scene, we see that Clementine has almost forgotten how to read. Her memories of her old life are fading. All that remains is trauma, guilt, frustration and a deep sense of loss. Who is Clementine if she is not fighting to survive? Batchelor, James (April 11, 2019). "Telltale's The Walking Dead "made Skybound what it is" ". GamesIndustry.biz. Archived from the original on April 11, 2019 . Retrieved April 11, 2019.Clementine is woken up the next morning by an Amish boy named Amos heading off on his Rumspringa. She chases after him and alerts him that walkers are behind him. After killing the walkers with his axe, Amos asks Clementine where she is headed. She tells him she is travelling north and he informs her he is also travelling north. They travel together and Amos reveals that he is going to Killington in Vermont to build a homestead on the mountain where he will be awarded with a plane ride after the job is completed. They travel together in Amos' buggy into the night where they hear people calling for help, Amos helps the family into his buggy and Clementine drives them all to safety. While Clementine is asleep, one of the people they saved tries to assault Clementine. She holds a knife to his head and then stomps on his hand with her prosthetic foot before leaving. Amos chases after Clementine on his horse and asks her to come with him to Vermont. They travel together for nine days and finally arrive at the base of the mountain, where they are met with twin sisters who won't tell them their names. Clementine doesn't trust them and tells Amos she's staying with him. They ride a ski lift to the top where they meet a girl named Ricca. She informs Clem that she's been calling the twin with the ponytail Right, and the twin with her down Left. The twins tell them that they only have a cabin and shed left standing from last winter and that they want to build three new structures and a cleared road by the end of winter. They all settle down in the cabin for the night but are woken up by an avalanche hitting their cabin, putting a hole in their roof. Today we revealed a moving new look at CLEMENTINE BOOK ONE, beginning a new Young Adult graphic novel trilogy set in the world of Robert Kirkman’s THE WALKING DEAD, from award-winning writer/artist Tillie Walden (Spinning, On A Sunbeam).

The story itself is fine, if not particularly original or strong enough to withstand more than passing scrutiny. Perhaps the gaps will be filled in better in Books Two and Three. It doesn't help that Tillie Walden's art is occasionally too murky to differentiate between characters or to fully illustrate what's happening to them. I really enjoyed Amos tho, who was a delight. I just... I don't think I'm this book's target demographic. I don't care about your standard zombies and I'd much rather read about teenage angst in real world situations (tho, perhaps hilariously, one of my favorite zombie books is Lia Habel's steampunk-zombie-teen romance mashup Dearly, Departed.) A coming-of-age tale of survival written and illustrated by two-time Eisner award winner Tillie Walden (Spinning, On a Sunbeam). The next Skybound Comet releases will be Everyday Hero Machine Boy OGN (MAY218589) from rising star voices Tri Vuong and Irma Kniivila in September 2022, followed by Sea Serpent’s Heir Book One (MAY218588) from acclaimed creators Mairghread Scott (Star Wars: Resistance, Guardians of the Galaxy) and Pablo Tunica (TMNT Universe) in October 2022. Clementine meets a young boy while on the road and decides to tag along on the boy's journey up a Vermont mountain for contrived reasons, which leads to her helping a society of teenagers build houses on said mountains. No really, I kid you not. If you are wondering why AJ isn’t with her, well you should have read Skybound X true believer. That’s the issue where she leaves him for no good reason! The writer says it’s because Clementine isn’t happy, but this book and that issue never justified that reason or made it feel like a valid one. I’m usually fine with writers not telling the readers everything, but Clementine's story was already complete, so you have to give us a justification for this story existing or it just comes across as hollow and forced. Right before his death, Tim tells Georgia not to let Olivia go. Georgia takes this to heart after finding out Amos was planning on leaving with Olivia.Hamilton, Kirk (27 April 2012). "5 Reasons The Walking Dead Game Is Better Than The TV Show". Kotaku. Gizmodo Media Group. Archived from the original on 17 November 2012 . Retrieved 7 December 2012. I don’t know, something in me changed after I got bit. I ignored it for a while but it keeps growing. This idea that I...I was going to live. And not just day by day like I had been. I could live for months...years...that I might be an adult someday, like my mom was. I don't know why but it scared me so much. So much that it felt like I couldn’t breathe.” Removed from Telltale's The Walking Dead, this is fine. A 3/5 at most. There's pacing issues, and many of the panels are hard to read visually, so it takes a buffering moment to actually understand what is going on. This should not have been greyscale as I think Walden's work leans into the use of color. If she had, I think the legibility of the story would've been a lot better. That, and the quality of this story really takes a toll given that it feels rushed—which explains a lot of the pacing issues, as well as awkward character beats (rushed development, for instance). So I didn’t play the Walking Dead Telltale game and I have no idea who Clementine is or why anyone cares; I’m clearer now about who she is but remain baffled as to the caring part. In this book she’s a moody teen amputee who meets an Amish kid called Amos whose rumspringa involves travelling to a Vermont mountain and helping strangers build a house or something and getting a plane ride in return.
