About this deal

Large Appliances - (Washing Machines, Dishwashers, Fridge Freezers etc). Free Local Delivery Service (Cumbria, SW Scotland and NE England*) 2-3 working days. I’m purposely overlooking cables as they fall outside the purview of this article and all testing was done with standardized high-quality copper Mogami cables. 1. Driver replacement They do offer the Prestige lineup in a P-mount. I have a Blue3 and Opus3 right now making some great music. They’re not the most relaxing listen and some won’t like the uncompromising nature of the midrange they present, but clarity relative to the price is excellent. Like the Grado SR60X, this is another example of a headset that passively amplifies noise from the surroundings. You can see this on the isolation chart where the pink line drops below the x-axis into negative attenuation (otherwise known as gain). We believe this is the result of the acoustic design of the headphones, which creates a pronounced resonance at 2kHz—the fact that ambient noise at this frequency is also boosted suggests this is achieved with an acoustic resonator.

But even with vented drivers, the G Cush pads have flaws. Unlike the Beyerdynamic pads, which get their strength from the outer rim, which is not porous, the salad bowls are a big sponge. They’re far easier to put on and take off, and they allow a clearer top end, but the architecture of styrofoam requires the aperture to be v-shaped, like the gradual depth of a swimming pool rather than the sudden depth of a cup. This gives them better durability but it also means that instead of creating a cave for your earlobe, it creates a v-shaped cushion that touches your ear. This creates weird microphonics when you move your head around. It also makes the presentation more shrill. We enjoy the style, but when the upper-mids are also un-smoothed – not quite raw or hard but without quite the level of refinement heard in Grado’s more expensive pairs – some may find them slightly tiring for long periods at higher volumes.

How well does the Grado Labs SR60x block noise?

Placing the driver itself into wooden shell instead of plastic would make more sense maybe they tested it and results were NOT that great but we will never know and they will probably never tell… A Prayer for Lester Bowie by David Sanford Big Band was one of my top jazz releases of 2021 and a glorious recording to really test the SR80x and compare them to my budget favorite, HiFiMan HE400se headphones. The SR80x also surprised me with a “2021” playlist created by my kids filled with Drake, Lana Del Rey, Dua Lipa, Tyler, the Creator, and Olivia Rodrigo — I’m getting old apparently. Their presentation is up-front, music seeming to ‘start’ close to your ears; the open, well-separated sound doesn’t cling to your eardrums in the way lesser up-front headphones might make it.

Once you get used to the unusual feel, they’re fine, and they don’t make your ears hot like some leather pads. For full extension, you need the G Cush salad bowls, but they distance the ear from the driver to such a degree that bass is lost, probably because of the porous side rims. What you end up with is too shrill for everything below a GS-1000. That’s where venting the drivers helps balance things out. With fully vented drivers, you can pop a pair of salad bowls on and get a very nice combo of airy treble-happy Grados with great thump. Sennheiser has the right idea with the HD800 (even if it places the driver further from the ear): No headphone needs a shell, whether it’s made of plastic, wood or aluminum. The best, tightest bass comes from an infinite baffle, which is what you have if you mount a speaker to a hole in a wall or your headphone tosses the rear shell. SR80x Headphones

As there’s no fat to the sound, nothing to clog up the separation between parts of an arrangement, the SR80es can jump between genres without any obvious flaws highlighted. They’re light to wear, and sit comfortably on the ears, so you can happily listen for hours. If I have one quibble: the cable is on the short side and you have to sit pretty close to any fixed hi-fi components– but this can be easily remedied with an extension cable! Personally, I’ve never liked closed models, though I own some closed AKG, but I’m old enough to remember the old Koss ‘head crushers’ from the 1970s. When Sennheiser came along with the HD414, not only did they sound like music rather than tea cups, but they were blissfully comfortable too.

Common cup materials include cherry, cocobolo, ebony, limba, mahogany, maple, oak, padauk, rosewood, and walnut. Users report anything from improved bass, midrange or treble. Some report changes in soundstage and imaging. Typically reports are positive, although some feel that there are perceptible decreases in the treble with particular woods. When you’ve worn a particular brand of headphones for that many years, you know what to expect from a comfort perspective and these are dramatically better. After changing to wooden cups, the users often report a more woody, earthy, warmer tone. Aluminum or metal cups are often described as bright, tinny, cold or sibilant. Notice anything about those descriptive terms for the sound? They seem to be descriptions of the material itself; perhaps the eyes of the user are impacting what they hear? I digress. Conclusion A great DIY headphone build is not simply about function and utility. It should combine style, performance, and luxury. The products pictured in this article make beauty a priority and have infused art into supremely functional objects. With Shipibo Audio’s creations married to the superb sounding Symphones V8 drivers, you have a wearable work of art, with a refined sound quality to rival or better any of Grado’s best. Please note: TV and larger floorstanding speaker deliveries are not available to Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man, Isle of Wight, Scottish Islands, and Channel Islands.
