About this deal

I liked Oswald in Her Baseborn Bridegroom and for most of this book. He made some mistakes with the heroine and hoped that he would make them right by the end. Then the main conflict happened and he just doubled down on his bad qualities. The resolution wasn't good enough to make up for it. Next time,” he said tightly. “I want you to simply tell me from the outset whatever is troubling you. I don’t like misjudging you.” Fenella and Oswald grew up together as neighbors, and he was her first love. She wrote him poems, made detailed tapestries she gifted to him, and then he disappeared after a horrific battle when he was only 21. Fenella comes to him for help with her marriage/divorce issues, Oswald decides he will keep her. The play was definitely the thing here. I loved how that dumb bulb cheater king Wymer tried to figure out the implications of the play while his clever queen Armenal figured it out straight away.

She paused, considering a moment, then shook her head. “Please stay safe,” she urged. “You have made your fortune now and earned your new title. Can you not look to retire from such dangerous service to the crown?” He has much work at court, Linnet,” said Mason swiftly. “You know how the King relies on him. Then, when he has time, he also has to set Vawdrey Keep to rights.”Jealousy it seems is a trait that runs in the Vawdrey family. It can churn out some hilarious situations. Unfortunately Oswald’s POVs rarely occurred in the second half of the book.

I just loved everything about this. The set-up was a little bit longer than I expected but once Oswald and Fenella are married, I was so hooked on everything. I loved Oswald's obsession with Fenella and his machinations behind the scenes. I loved Fenella learning the ways of the court. I loved every miscommunication. I love jealous and possessive heroes and believe the hero Mason in the first book was like that. I felt his possessive and jealousy whenever other men showed interest in Linnet, the heroine from the first book. However even though we are told that Oswald he felt possessive of Fenella and jealousy including toward her first husband it was all telling & no showing. It was not believable for several reasons. For one it was made apparent over and over again that Fenella was was not attractive. Readers kept being told how overweight and plain looking she was and Fenella felt the same way about herself. Also Oswald was not attracted to her when they first met again. He too thought that Fenella homely as well as dumpy. In addition everyone pitied her. A plain and sad woman who begged for someone to stop her husband from divorcing her but ended up that way nevertheless. I love how these Vawdrey's brother loose their heads and their emotions go over the top when they mee the right woman! LMAOOO Also her personality was very bland and boring, much like the book. The story dragging filled with details about her daily life and her interactions and gossiping with other women. It really took a lot of effort to finish. There is just one slim chance to avoid this fate, one person of prominence at court who she knows has the ear of the King. Oswald Vawdrey, the man who cruelly jilted her when she was a starry-eyed fifteen year old with a head full of romantic dreams. She is currently being courted by two suitors,” admitted Linnet. “But neither of them is as distinguished as you. Or an Earl.” Oh, we know you're terribly successful at court,” Linnet hurried to assure him. “And we're both awfully proud of your achievements in the King's council. Mason said you are Wymer's most trusted adviser these days, and certainly everyone agrees, the most competent.” He wanted you just as happy,” said Mason surprising him. “It's true,” said his brother gruffly. “He spoke to Linnet of it at the end.” Oswald lost his head since the beginning: he became jealous-crazy! He manipulated poor Fenella until she didn't understand anything at all!!!
