About this deal

The best developers for pulling HP5+ are Perceptol, and Ilfosol 3. Perceptol is a renowned fine-grain developer for pulling film. Ilfosol 3 is the perfect choice for maintaining image contrast and tonality across a pulled negative. It’s wide exposure latitude makes it a great choice for beginners, those returning to film as well as the more experienced professional users. Continuing from the examples above, another option for better exposures in low light would be to overexpose and push process one half to one full stop over the speed you shot at (overexposure plus over development) but that’s my preference and yours may differ.

Ilford, a Harman Technology brand was founded in Alfred Hugh Harman ’s basement in 1879 — just 52 years after the first photograph was produced. It was then named Britannia Works ; however, Alfred lost the rights to label his products with that name in a lawsuit. And so in February 1886, he rebranded his photosensitive materials in Ilford, after his hometown. I never liked HP5, whilst I do like Tri-X the most. However, HP5 is affordable where I live and Tri-X is just increasing in price. At 3200, shots of dark water look awesome, different textures, trees and stuff like that come out looking surreal, because of that contrast and tonality. When developed normally, HP5+ is a remarkably versatile emulsion. Its box speed ISO 400 is already ideal for a wide range of light conditions with most cameras — from full sun to indoor lighting without a tripod. But the film can also be shot at ISO 200-800 without significant loss of detail. HP5+ has a huge dynamic range; its contrast can be changed by adjusting exposure and readjusted digitally.

Film review: ILFORD HP5 PLUS in 35mm, 120 and sheet formats

for better exposures in low light would be to over expose and push process one half to one full stop over the speed you shot at (over exposure plus over development) but that’s my preference and yours may differ.“HP and FP were refined and updated over the decades that followed, becoming HP2 and FP2, then HP3 and FP3. The product line was expanded to include cine film, aerial film and yes, more of those plates. This is the flowchart of the best developers for Ilford HP5+ and when to use them. DD-X is the best developer combination I’ve found in my experience. However, it’s not as good for pulling HP5. If you overexpose this film one or two stops, I’d highly recommend pulling with ilfosol to maintain image contrast. How Far can I push or Pull HP5? Hi Massimo, I'll answer your questions since you asked, but I'm actually working on a better (and I think simpler)… I’m unfortunately none the wiser for choosing my film. I think all I really took away was that Pan F at ISO 50 is stellar for zero grain for landscape photography in bright light, and that XP2 Super can be processed using a colour process = cheaper. I’d love to see a table of info – film types down the left side, and columns for things like: grain; contrast; lighting conditions; ability to push/pull in post-processing; and special notes.

Note: All example pictures are shown as originally scanned with no post-processing whatsoever for greater objectivity in comparison. The film can also be reversal developed to produce slides by following a typical two-bath plus second exposure system and it’s my understanding that ILFORD are in the process of updating their documentation at the time of writing. Of all the problems I had with digital photography there was one that always got me; photograph in the dark looked like crap. Even with good full frame bodies, they still looked awful to me.Unless you’re trying out a certain film type for a specific reason, the less you can spend on rolls for your street photography where the results are going to be more hit and miss than studio work, obviously the better. However, if you push- or pull-process your HP5+, it’ll likely become more sensitive to over- and under-exposures and require finer metering for best results. There’s no denying that HP5 PLUS’ grain can be intense. Whilst the grain structure is similar to Kodak’s Tri-X 400, it still has what I would characterise as a “modern utility” – a potentially stark tonality waiting to be brought into the frame… Having said that, any film or digital camera will give more contrast in certain light than in others, and I certainly found this with HP5 Plus.

Everything on the street outside the vehicle is also legible. The sky looks unnaturally bright (I don’t think it was particularly hazy that day) though I’m sure this can be corrected with a yellow filter. There’s a branding reason Ilford uses Plus or “+” in their emulsions’ names. HP5+ is grouped with FP4+ (est. 1935) and Pan F+ (est. 1948) in the Plus range of films. Films in Ilford’s Plus range are all the latest generations of “established” emulsions in ISOs 400, 125, and 50. I can’t speak from experience when it comes to developing HP5 Plus, but I can point you in the right direction for the information needed to do so yourself. The processing chart is right here, the massive dev chart entry is right here, and the general data sheet is right here. With an ISO rating of 400, Tri-X is an ideal film for overcast days and darkened rooms with window lighting. Kodak’s Tri-X exposure latitude is a well-known secret amongst film enthusiasts. Offering a generous three stops of exposure latitude (+/- 1.5 stops), it’s forgiving for under or over-exposing.
