About this deal

After dozens and dozens of strikes, this fire starter saw nearly no wear and tear on the ferro rod. A few of the fire starters we tested started to wear down from the large number of strikes, but the Bear Grylls fire starter held up fantastically. According to the brand, the Bear Grylls Fire Starter has been rigorously tested and approved for up to 8,000 strikes over its lifetime, which is at the higher end of the fire starters we tested. Choose the best survival fire starter and make sure that you always have the fire you need to survive when you are out in the wilderness, desert, forest, or open savannah. The Zünden is available in three different sizes: trad (5/16” and 12,000 strikes), pro (3/8″ and 15,000 strikes), or fatty (½” and 20,000 strikes). The ferro rod spews some of the hottest, fattest sparks of the ferry rods we tried, with minimal effort. Sparks shower at 5,500 degrees F, catching even less-than-ideal tinder bundles aflame. Dry paper test: Again, wood matches were fine for lighting paper under ideal conditions. The sulfur match head burned for three seconds. Against wind and damp paper: The Zippo is the first “windproof” lighter, and it lived up to its name in our test; the flame withstood wind from a powerful fan. It also remains lit as long as you leave it open, saving you from burning a finger when lighting damp material. It passed our test, although took some time and re-strikes to keep the flame lit.

Most spark-based fire starters will only work if you have excellent tinder. There’s only so much tinder you can bring with you in your fire kit. Yes, you can find or make tinder, but this takes time. Features: We considered the additional features each fire starter included in its design (i.e. compass, whistle or protective case). The handmade handle is premium 100% hardwood, giving you a natural textured grip whenever you use it. We field tested 10 of the best fire starters and judged them on their ease of use, compactness, and the size and strength of their spark. We found the UST Strikeforce to be the best overall for its reliability and ease of use, though good options abound. Technically it does work, but the Coghlan’s Flint Striker is small and difficult to wield. I had to really dig into the outer coating to even get an initial spark, with something like 20 of the first strikes not producing anything.

Made of quality materials, this fire starter is a profound product for all types of outdoor trips, like camping, hiking, etc. as well as emergency or survival situations.

Best Ferro Rod and Striker Kit

On the downside, the Ferro rod built into this fire starter is tiny. It doesn’t do a great job of throwing sparks. Against wind and damp paper: The Storm Matches lit well in the wind, and burned as normal, but failed to ignite the damp paper in our admittedly harsh test. It did start the paper smoldering, but didn’t burn long enough to light fire. Picture the UST Blastmatch. Now remove all the unnecessary weight, gut it and make it as light as possible without entirely obliterating functionality. It works well, although you may have a little trouble with the striker getting the magnesium off. It is large and robust, compared to most other fire starters on the market.

Guide to Fire Starter Kits

There are very few things I dislike about the UST Sparkforce, Bear Grylls, and Light My Fire fire starters. They just didn’t match up to the competition. That being said, the problems I have with the nanoSTRIKER, Sparkie, and Coghlan’s are definite dealbreakers. UST Sparkforce

If you aren’t familiar with Ferro rods, read this post on how to use a Ferro rod fire starter and this guide to the best ferro rods. The lanyard cord comes with an emergency whistle, and the fire starter comes with a waterproof storage compartment for tinder. Well-made and durable, the Gerber Bear Grylls Fire Starter is a salient choice for anyone looking for a high-quality survival fire starter. Always follow fire safety rules. Never leave your fire unattended and always fully extinguish it when you’re done. Essential Survival Tools You absolutely must bring a first aid kit camping. Here are our thoughts on how to make the perfect one for camping The Ferro rod’s exposed part is slightly longer than with the Uberleben Zunder fire steel, which makes it easier to use. It’s also nice that the striker has a handle, so it’s easier to grip.

2. The best ferro rod

Shave the magnesium bar until you have bits and pieces of magnesium. Put the pieces of magnesium in a pile. The FlashTorch’s housing is anodized aluminum that will withstand any brutal work you put it through. There are three different settings — high, medium, and low — on the FlashTorch. Use it to light the trail with a wide floodlight or concentrate the beam to start a fire for cooking dinner. Verdict: While paper matches are super cheap and plentiful, they are not a great fire starting option for outdoors use.
