However their ancestors are larger Spitz-type dogs that hail from as far afield as Russia Siberia and other Arctic regions. Spitz dogs were at the time usually much bigger than the modern Pomeranian we know today with paintings from the 1700 and 1800's depicting their forerunners as being that much larger. The Patterdale Terrier is a compact, working breed that was originally bred to hunt foxes and other vermin. While there isn’t as much need for full time hunting dogs these days, the Patterdale Terrier has proven to quite a popular bet. These terriers are particularly popular in Europe, though they are starting to become more common in the United States and other countries. Europeans couldn’t keep this beautiful animal to themselves for long. These pups are far too easy to love for that. Congratulations on Your New Pomeranian!", American Pomeranian Club, p.1 , retrieved 28 September 2023 "Dogs 101: Pomeranian". Archived from the original on 7 June 2013 . Retrieved 20 June 2013. The Pomeranian's name comes from the historical region of Pomerania, which is where the breed was first developed. Pomeranians were originally bred to be smaller and more companionable than their larger Spitz ancestors, and were favored by nobility and royalty throughout Europe. Pomeranian puppies are very cute and it is all too easy to let them get away with things that a larger dog would never be allowed to do. It's very important not to "spoil" a puppy because it could lead them showing a more dominant side to their natures which even in small dogs can make them unruly and harder to handle. While the Pomeranian is a dog of the spitz type, they are definitely not working dogs, and are suitable for keeping as pets and companions only! They are nice natured and very affectionate, but should not be considered to be a pushover, being bold and outgoing in temperament too! Although they’re known as “giants,” this breed is simply a larger breed, and is only really a larger version of the Standard Schnauzer. These dogs don’t have to be as intimidating as they sound, but you should certainly know what you’re doing if you want to be able to acquire a dog of this breed, train it, socialize it, and help it to grow into the confident, friendly dog that it deserves to be. If you’re a good owner, you’ll probably find that the Giant Schnauzer is perfectly capable of being a good dog in return. La Pom’s parents both have a long coat- Pomeranian flaunts fluffy fur and the Lhasa Apso silky hypoallergenic hair. As their offspring, this designer dog can favor one of the parents more, which will influence their appearance. However, in general, these canines tend to have a medium to long hair that’s soft and dense, and often with a shorter undercoat under the straight and plush top coat. La Pom is a moderate shedder and low-maintenance when it comes to grooming.Their activity level is considered to be moderate, and they won’t need more than 45 minutes of exercise a day. The Pomeranian may be tiny, but they are true extroverts and have a very friendly and affectionate nature. They are the smallest of the Spitz type dogs and have a very fox-like appearance, wrapped in a bundle of fluff. They boast an interesting lineage, as the German Spitz is one of the dogs used to create the breed. Queen Victoria popularised these small dogs during their reign in the 1900s. Pomeranians are outgoing and alert little dogs and they form strong bonds with their families. However they can be a little too over-protective which can become a problem especially when they are around the children and at meal times. They are not the best choice for people with young children because Poms can be a little snappy. With this said any interaction between children and such a tiny dog has to be well supervised by an adult to make sure things don’t get too boisterous. a b "Pomeranian Health Problems".
