About this deal

There are several types of beds to choose from; electrical mains powered, self-heating pad, reflective, battery operated. It is best to do your research into each type of pad and figure out which would suit your pets best. While self-warming dog beds cannot always tell you exact compositions of materials, they can tell you where a bed was made, and they can offer warnings and cautions if a bed contains potentially dangerous materials. Inside there’s a layer of foam and the all-important Mylar layer to reflect and retain heat. Note that you can hear a bit of rustling or crinkling from this inner foil layer when your cat settles on the mat. But, many don’t, and they prefer the mat or pad style of bed that they can simply lie on top of and doze.

The self-heating in this bed comes from the mix of materials (but no space blanket layer) and the cover and together they are very effective at keeping your cat warm. We don’t recommend this as a stand-alone bed because it simply doesn’t have enough padding in the bottom for support, but the self-warming feature makes a great pairing with the Coolaroo or Kuranda beds in colder temperatures and for dogs that need the added warmth. Best budget heated cat bed: Wainwright's Self-Heating Dog Blanket Grey - View Offer at Pets at HomeWe'll discuss the several styles and specific options later, but first let's talk about how it works, its benefits and whether you even need one. How Do Self-Warming Dog Beds Work? It comes in a choice of two colors and at 21 by 17 inches, it’s big enough for any cat. It’s also fully machine washable. Self-warming cat beds are beds designed to maintain, reflect, and distribute your cat’s natural body heat.

One issue you may have is with the size. It’s supposed to be a tight-ish fit for your cat but large cats may not find it comfortable. The internal area is a modest 16 by 11 inches so make sure your cat will fit! Firstly, it’s from the folks at K&H(again) and, as we have said on many occasions, they are the leading makers of all types of pet beds. You can trust their quality and durability and they are fairly priced. In the same way, it's also important that when you choose a bed for your pupper, that you accommodate their current health concerns. Just like any electrically heated item, they need to be switched off. Think of them as electric blankets; if they are left on for too long, they could be potentially dangerous. All products mentioned are safe to use. However, common sense should be applied when using any electrically heated item. Just remember to turn it off when it's not in use and switch it off every few hours. There are only two obvious differences which are that it doesn’t come in a range of colors, but more relevantly, it is cheaper than our group test winner. Always buy from a brand that you trust, one that has a good reputation; don’t go with the cheapest bed just to save money as you'll lose more in the long-run anyway. Heat creates a more soothing experience for the dog by promoting muscle relaxation and even inducing sleep. Microwavable - Microwavable pet pads use the same method as a warming wheat bag in which they are filled with a conductive material that will hold on heat for a long while after coming out of the microwave. You’ve likely run across the self-warming dog bed while shopping for other items for your pup, particularly among winter dog supplies (even though it's not necessarily a winter-exclusive item).

There’s a good reason for including this one from Furhaven. They’re renowned as dog bed experts but their smaller size ranges are very popular with cat owners (as with their other bed in this test above). And that’s because they are very good at what they do and their beds are good value.A good dog bed can last your dog for years and it's worth the investment because you'll save money on not having to re-buy it, and possibly even saving on vet bills. This is enhanced by the use of their own brand CoziLOFT fibers in the filling that keeps clumping to a minimum while helping to keep the loft for longer and by keeping in the heat.

Produced with entirely pet-safe materials, the Pet Craft Supply cat bed is easy to maintain and clean. This makes it very effective at retaining heat but we did find that despite this level of padding it doesn’t feel much fuller than other pad-style cat beds. That top shaggy layer is very soft though. For cats and dogs with less fur: Some smaller size breeds can struggle to maintain their temperature, especially if they are short-haired (or completely hairless in the case of a sphynx cat!). Or perhaps your pet struggles with a skin condition that affects their hair growth or causes their hair to fall out? Since their fur is a key part of their heat regulation, if it's missing they may need an alternative way to keep warm. Heating pads provide that alternative. In all our cat bed roundups we end up recommending a lot of K&H products and having to explain why.
